Hello. Not too experienced with Broadway productions, though I am trying mightily to learn.
I have never seen Marin on stage, but everytime I have seen her on video (Passion, My Favorite Broadway, ect.) it seems she steals the show. I even think she may be able to pull off Piazza. Why hasn't she been given any juicy roles lately? Am I missing something? What are your thoughts, impressions, and any information on this performer.
thanks!

I love her, and have worked with her. And I agree!
Funny you say that. I was hoping I might have the chance to see her in "Piazza" when the show hit L.A. Sadly, that won't be happening.
I don't even know if she was seen for it, but I certainly hope so.
Marin is a lot of fun (both on stage and off), and I have some very fond memories of our early years in New York.

Posted: 6/27/06 at 7:29pmThey very seldom write shows these days for performers like Marin Mazzie. I believe she does a lot of concert work with her husband. I saw them perform together at the Encores! BASH in November. They were excellent. Their new CD is somewhat disappointing though.

Posted: 6/27/06 at 7:33pmTo me, it's amazing I have seen her in several productions. I saw her in Passion, Ragtime, and with her husband in the pasadena Playhouse production a short while ago in 110 in the Shade. She is a terrific presence.

Posted: 6/27/06 at 7:55pmRAGTIME is one of the greatest musicals ever written. Musically, it may be the best.
#12re: marin mazzie
Posted: 6/27/06 at 8:11pmYes Ragtime is certainly IMO the best musical since the Rodgers & Hamerstein era, and the score stands up there. Ragtime showed a return to epic grandeur in story and music that unfortunately was short lived on broadway and drowned out by Lions, Cats, and Roller Skates, oh my!

Posted: 6/27/06 at 9:12pmShe was FABULOUS in Kismet. I absolutley loved her. She has such tremendous presence.....I wish somebody would write a show for her. I would be on a flight to New York in an instant to see that. Also love the idea of her as Margaret in LITP. I hope she comes back to Broadway soon! If anyone is interested, she sang one of Jeff Blumenkrantz's songs for his podcast, great stuff. Check it out at www.jeffblumenkrantz.com

Posted: 6/27/06 at 9:58pmJodi Benson is a singer who constantly has trouble with her pitch. I wouldn't brag about sharing a hometown with her.

Posted: 6/27/06 at 10:35pmJodi Benson is not alone with her pitch problems. I think the trend to over-stylize songs has a lot to do with this. I just hate it, though.

Posted: 6/28/06 at 8:28amLast I remember reading, she is trying to get more TV work. it's less demanding and more lucrative. It's great that she's reached a level in her career where she can just show up for a benefit or concert or Encore's thing and be the toast of the town. It would be great to get her (and Jason) back in a Bway show. Maybe there's a part for her in Flaherty/Ahrens' The Glorious Ones!

Great article Dollypop. I appreciate the feedback. I thought I must be missing something, because this wonderful singer should have a show on the boards every year.
What do you think about her playing the role of Desiree in A Little Night Music?

Posted: 6/28/06 at 3:08pmShe should have been cast as Lizzie in the Ruondabout's 110 in the Shade. At least her hair is the same color as Inga Swenson's
#22re: marin mazzie
Posted: 6/28/06 at 3:43pmI think Desiree would be a good part for her:) I know I've heard they're reviving it with Glenn Close in the lead (you all probably knew that though) and that doesn't really make sense to me...

The reason Marin hasn't been doing much in NY lately is for a couple of reasons: (and this is from Ms. Mazzie herself)
1) She's moved to L.A. to pursue a film and TV career. This is less demanding/stressful work for her. The pressure of being an 'above the title' star is immense on Broadway. The producers are banking on your presence and 110% effort eight times per week.
2)There hasn't been much in NY that has interested her in the last few years. She would really like to do a straight play though.
It is a shame that she hasn't done more theatre lately. I see her as the epitome of a leading lady. Ragtime is the first show I obessesed over and the Marin/Brian/Audra trio of that show will always be immortal to me. I got to see Marin perform "Back to Before" with the Boston Pops the summer after the show opened and I was in absolute awe of her talent.

I wanted to add that I adore Marin Mazzie, plain and simple. She is a jewel of the theater world and am disappointed/ more sad to hear that she is focusing on film and TV. She shines on the stage and her concerts are brillant!
I had the opportunity to meet her after her most recent concert in NYC and she not only remembered me from the CD signing in November but insisted on us taking a picture. She was great! Either way, I honestly and trully wish her luck in whatever avenue she decides to follow.
