i am SO sorry for you jess20882 - i went to see this show expecting just some of the magic from the film or at least the humor of the books, but there was NONE! gavin lee is a decent bert, rebecca luker is severely under-utilized, and although she was out i know ruth gotschall would have been fabulous. ashley brown, however, was like a dead angry fish onstage, if she didnt have the huge set behind her i am sure the audience would have thrown tomatoes at the stage.

Just for a different point of view, I thought Ashley was excellent - 'practically perfect', as it were.
In fact, I was thoroughly engaged by the whole show - and I am a HUGE fan of the movie. It's not the movie - it stood on its own, for me anyway.
I hope you enjoy.

DG, I agree with you. Ashley Brown was stunning. I loved the finale song - a truely magical moment.
The stage version at times is definitely darker than the movie.

Posted: 5/26/07 at 9:58pmBUNDY-- I have seen the show 5 times now, love it; but i talked to the ushers almost every time and got to know a couple of them very well and there was only 1 or 2 times that she didn't fly, but disney does everything they can to make sure she can fly. It must have just been that day you went. Sorry, such a cool effect tho!

Posted: 5/27/07 at 2:21amSpeaking of flying, I was at a local theatre that houses a nationa tour, and I was thinking "they can't bring Mary Poppins national tour to this theatre, there is no place that she can flying into and disappear, then can come down for the curtain call." There is a rafter for lights, but the problem is that once Mary Poppins flies into the rafter, she has to run down to get out from there to the back stage for the curtain call appearance. And to get off from this rafter, she has to come down via ladder. So, unless they can make a special rafter for the touring company, not many theatres can house Mary Poppins national tour, or they have to change the direction (she won't fly at the end) to accomodate such challenge.

Posted: 5/27/07 at 3:12amThe tour flying is simple. I've said before, all that needs to be done is fly her to a faux light truss overhead that can conceal her, then fly her majestically back down to the stage for the curtain call. The effect could then be the same in every single theatre. I believe the Phantom tour requires or at one point required a beam position lighting truss overhead. Back in the early nineties, the phantom tour would "phantomize" road houses, ie making upgrades so that the tour could be accomodated. One of these upgrades was reinforcing the ceilings of road houses that didn't have an overhead beam lighting position previously installed so that the phantom tour could hang its truss overhead. The bottom line is, just about any theatre that phantom has played it can structurally support the rigging required to fly a 120 lb woman over the audience. It can also support a truss to conceal said woman.
