"mike" question

I saw "Brooklyn" last night---(again)----the cast is just amazing. My question is: Eden had a slight cough, but every time she coughed----no sound----so, her mike was off. Does every performer have the ability to shut off his/her own mike or did Eden have incredible timing?

I don't know the answer, but I saw the show last Tuesday and totally noticed the same thing. I didn't see her reach for a mic pack to switch anything off or on, and sometimes it was really fast between her coughing and singing. Can anyone clarify?

There's always room for pathos - and jazz hands.

I think the sound person keeps tabs on who speaks where and when, so maybe when Eden doesn't sing or speak, he turns her mic down? I don't know.

I've noticed that type of thing, too, when I've seen shows; an actor makes noise onstage, but their mic isn't on. I don't think the actors usually have access to their mic pack, since they are usually hidden in costumes.

I ran the soundboard for a high school production once and I made sure that if the actor wasn't singing or talking that their mic was off. I am sure that they do that for Broadway too, it only makes sense.

Why couldn't you run the soundboard for MY productions in high school? I remember during this one show, the damn sound man "forgot" to turn off the handheld mics that were placed backstage for offstage voices.

Yeah.

Let's just say that I wasn't a happy cookie and he got cussed out after the performance.

Just don't go to the bathroom until you know your body mic is off.
It's not polite for the audience to hear you pee. re: 'mike' question

They weren't very high tech at my high school our mic's where really bad and temperamental so we couldn't' touch them as the actor they where on the whole show and then the sound people where uncharged of knowing who was on when..

So like it's said before even on bway with the better mic's I'm sure while they are onstage actors aren't to touch there mic's. Also I know Edan was out sick last week so they are prob. aware of that as well and made sure her mic was down even if it isn't normally. ya know? Also once and a while oyu can hear someones mic being turnd up where there on stage.

at my school they weren't always so great at it once in the middle of crazy for you there was a random "F*CK" in the middle of a scene, an actor from the scene right before had some type of issue and waited to get back to the hall where the dressing rooms to voice it.. But even in that time they sound crew still hadn't turned down his mic...
