i think that in "cat on a hot tin roof", homosexuality casts a sort of shadow over the characters. its this looming force, almost, that williams' used to make the drama more intensified. most of his plays that i've read have a gay subplot, but in "cat" it is given a bigger chunk of the story than say, "a streetcar named desire". because williams himself was gay, he used the theme quite often, but had to downplay it because at his time, i dont think a gay play would have told tickets.
