Not upbeat but a great song:

'With Every Breath I Take' from City of Angels.

When I am going for a belting part (I'm a soprano or a mezzo) I often use Home from Beauty and the Beast. It's not upbeat, but I like it. I've also used "Always true to you" from Kiss me Kate, but there are a few notes low notes in the one.

Hope it helps--break a leg!

I agree with "home" from Beauty and The Beast.

Another good one would be "When you got it flaunt it" from The Producers.

or

"Sing for your Supper" by Rodgers and Heart

Anything from the older, classic shows. Something like "Oh What A Beautiful Morning" from OKLAHOMA or "I Could Write A Book" from PAL JOEY.

If you can sing the older songs, you can sing the newer songs.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

What kind of drama teacher doesn't decide on a show until AFTER auditions? Is he new to the department, or just stupid?
