Posted: 10/25/05 at 3:42pmStupid question, but why not just put Mary Poppins in the Minskoff? Why transport a show that's already established at the Amsterdam?

Posted: 10/25/05 at 3:45pmThe New Amsterdam belongs to Disney and they need to do a LOT to the theatre to get the set in and so on, so it's easier to do it to a theatre they own. I think that's the reason.

That was about to be my question.
It doesn't make sense. Although, Beauty and the Beast was better off when they moved. I don't really like the Palace theater for Broadway Shows.

Posted: 10/25/05 at 4:13pmI can't wait till this is over and done with, and LK is moved in. All the speculation and rumour and the "I don't get it" threads every few weeks drives me crazy. As mentioned many times on this board the New Am is their flagship theatre. As much as LK works great in that theatre, they want to present Mary Poppins (a show unlike Tarzan and Aida, with a lot of buzz and build up) at this theatre and create a spectacle with all the hoopla that surrounded LK in 97. Now why the minksoff? For one the hilton did not look like it was going to be available. Talk for a long time was to have the two shows across from each other. "You can't get into MP? well we have tickets for LK right there behind you across the street." (Much like they do with BB). The minskoff then became the only other large house and its orchestra seats more (as I have learned on here) then the new am. Translation: more seats at highest price. Minskoff is also right in times square so as buzz grows on wicked, tarzan, mp and other children aimed shows LK will always be visable to the ticket buyer. I personally think its a smart idea, and we forget about the old days when shows use to move houses all the time (look at 42nd st, grease, birdie, etc..) This will benefit both LK and MP. The only thing I am curious to see is will some of pride rock not make the move..(ie any downsizing at all.)

Sorry - I actually havnt heard that Lion King is transfering there.
Any one else not likling Disney taking over Broadway!
Its too much. I think Mary Poppins is a great show and should come over but I think they should transfer it over when Beauty and the Beast closes or something. When Little Mermaid opens that will be like 5 disneys! 3 or 4 i think is more than enough!

Maybe Disney having a multitude of shows on Broadway, may be a slight over kill, I have to thank Disney for what they have done for New York City and Broadway.
Trust me on this, New York City Time Square and Broadway would not be half of what it is today without Disney and their restoration of 42nd Street.

Posted: 10/25/05 at 4:57pmI think its great what Disney is doing - just wish they'd do more "original" shows like Aida instead of just putting their shows on stage - granted they do change them around a bit, so no complants here. Although I do have one question. Is the layout for the New Amsterdam and Minskoff the same? Like i know on tour, the animals in the begining come through the audience, is that going to be able in the Minskoff or do they have continental seating? Also, why would they downsize? I didn't think the Pride Rock on the tour was all that impressive. It was just a bunch of yellow steps.

The Minskoff is the same as the New Amsterdam in that there are two aisles for the actors to enter through in Circle of Life. And it hasn't been made clear yet whether they will be downsizing any of the physical production or the cast. It doesn't seem like they would need to since their still doing great business and the Minskoff is still a pretty large theater.

Posted: 10/25/05 at 5:11pmYeah, i wouldn't think they would. Even the tour to me didn't look downsized. Although I heard that Pride rock comes from the stage in the broadway production, which I guess is sorta cool, but I kinda like the way it slinked in from the sides.

If I'm not mistaken, the Minskoff's stage is larger than the New Amsterdam's and there is much more trap space. I think that the Minskoff is a fabulous theatre. People always call it too large or too ugly, but seriously, it is techincally a fabulous theatre. Just about anything in terms of the physical production can be pulled off much easier on its stage than most others! Sure the theater is known for having its set of "floptastic" musicals, but maybe we can consider that Lion King will begin the Minskoff's clean bill of health, lol. The main reason that shows die so quickly in the theater is the fact that the house is enormous; however, we know that Lion King obviously sells the seats so, maybe for once, the Minskoff will have the long run that it has never recieved?!?
....Scenically however, think of shows like Sunset Boulevard and Dance of the Vampires....These two productions were massively designed and the Minskoff was quite accomodating. I don't think Pride Rock will have any problems!

I dont know if anyone saw "TOM SAWYER" in the 2 weeks it was open at the Minskoff, but that set was freekin HUGE. Pride rock and anything else that wanna put on that stage will fit perfect.
Not sure the animals will be able to come through the audience, there is no middle aisle at the minskoff.so maybe just the sides. It should be really cool to see it in a new location, moving theaters keeps that production fresh anyway.

There's no middle aisle at the New Amsterdam, either. The Palace has one, however.

Wonder how they're going to deck out the new Minskoff w/ Lion King posters ha, seems like the New Amsterdam is covered in them.
ON a side note, anyone have pics of the Tom sawyer musical? why'd it only last two weeks - it suck?
