no overture in Piazza?

Posted: 2/25/06 at 5:25pmI am seeing the show on March 9th, and just read yesterday in a thread that they did not include the overture in the show. why would they do this? I think the overture is beautiful and would have set the mood perfectly. was it in for the beginning of the run? when did they decide to cut it? anyone who has seen the show and can provide some light (no pun intended) on the situation......

Posted: 2/25/06 at 5:25pmThe overture is in the show, just not as long as it is on the CD.

Posted: 2/25/06 at 5:47pmI LOVE "Piazza's" overture and happen to love overtures in general. I find it sad that so many new musicals forgo the overture for something that is probably more appropriatley called an "opening" ("Wicked" comes to mind). A great overture (like "Piazza's") is a real mood-setter. I really hate it when theaters cut some or all of an overture. I'm directing a production of "My Fair Lady" this summer and have already told a board representative and my producer that I will not cut one note or word from the show, and that includes the overture. Sorry for thread-jacking a bit.

Posted: 2/25/06 at 5:51pmI freakin' can't wait to see this!!! I have been wanting to since it opened, and never got around to it, so I bought my bf tickets for valentine's (which is selfish because we both wanted to see it, but it wasn't at the top of his list. oh well, I bought him "la cage" for last years, and that's what he wanted to see.) anyway, I sort of made a promise to myself that I would see it before Victoria left. I am all about her.

Posted: 2/25/06 at 5:54pmLike I said in the other thread, I love overtures and Piazza's is really good. But because there's no curtain the audience's attention would be lost before it was even found.

The overture in the theatre doesn't contain the title song or "Passegiata" sections. It's a stunning lighting effect, evoking a sunrise. Also, I just don't think the full overture in the theatre would be at all suitable, given the lack of a curtain and the way that the abbreviated overture flows right into the first scene. You will be mesmerized.

have fun seeing this show! i promis you it will blow you away!
and the overture is shortened, but it is really cool how it leads right into the story with the leaves blowing, and victoria walking in... *sigh* i love this show! :)

Posted: 2/26/06 at 12:25pmthey tried out different lengths in both chicago and new york. shorter always worked better. like someone said it gently flows right into the start of the show. when an overture starts everyone starts to quite down and get excited, but if it keeps going on and on their focus on the music for the most part is lost until something starts happening on stage. it looses its effect.

Posted: 2/26/06 at 1:01pmI love a big, long, drawn out Overture, that builds to a crescendo and leaves the audience in a dither before the curtain even goes up.

How many modern audiences have you seen built into a "dither" by an overture? :P
I love overtures too, but the timing on Piazza is excellent. It's an appropriate length to get us into the musical mood, and then it just sort of flows nicely into the story. I like it!
