What does non-required principal mean?

Equity periodically holds required auditions, which are exactly that, and a principal audition is for the principal roles, as opposed to chorus/ensemble roles...so a non-required principal audition is.....

By listing it as non-required, it's saying that there's a chance they are actually looking for people--something rarely true with required calls these days.

If I recall, it means they actually have an opening for that role. "Required" means tghat they have to hold auditions even though there might not be a role available.
