I think I dined at all the placesthat were mentioned at one time or another. If you like Thai, there is Pongsi Thai on 48th. There is Tony's on 43rd which is similar to Carmine's and L'Allegria which is on 44th and 9th. It is reasonable and has good food.

In addition to those mentioned I liked Joshua Tree on Restaurant Row. Inexpensive and good variety.

I'd like to suggest CASCINA on 9th Avenue between 45th and 46th.

too many toursist traps listed! Mexican: Arriba Arriba on 9th Ave at 51st Street has the best Margaritas. And Delta Grill on 9th Ave and 47th-ish is yummy too for crabcakes, chicken fried steaks and things. Ate there last night.

If you really want to be a tourist though, feel free to go to Mars 2021 or Houlihan's...

WAY too many tourist traps listed in this thread. Houlihan's? Virgil's? There must be better ways to save money...

B. Smith's is now on Restaurant Row. It's excellent. Also on Restaurant Row are two memorable Italian restaurants--Becco and Orso--and Joe Allen's for old-time theatre district charm. For classic French cuisine on that same block, Le Rivage is always good. The chef is the son of the fabulous Martine, owner of La Duchesse Anne upstate near Woodstock.

On 49th between Bway and 8th is Baldoria, owned by Frank Pellegrino, also an actor in the cast of The Sopranos, and son of the owner of Rao's, the legendary Mafia hangout in East Harlem. Baldoria is Rao's South--great Italian food and classic New York atmosphere.

On Theatre Row, there is Chez Josephine, owned by Jean-Claude Baker, one of Josephine Baker's children. Great French food and theatrical atmosphere.

Another good French restaurant convenient to the theatre and efficient about getting you out in time is Cafe Un Deux Trois at 123 West 44th.

On 9th and 50th is Uncle Nick's. Great cheap Greek seafood and appetizers and lamb dishes. Once my partner and I sat and listened to what we thought was an obnoxious investment banker at the table next to us lecture his bimbo girlfriend about her finances. After they left, someone told us that the guy we thought was an IB was Marc Kudisch and the "bimbo" was Kristin Chenoweth. At the time, she was in Charlie Brown and he was in The Wild Party. Glad she dumped him, but I hope she took his advice and bought that co-op at the insider's price.

For a splurge meal, make a reservation at the spectacular JUdson Grill on 52nd between 6th and 7th or the elegant and yummy Citarella at 49th and 6th (they have a take-out dowstairs) or the sumptuous Cite' on 51st between 6th and 7th. If you want good bistro food without the elegant surroundings, Cite' has the less-expensive Cite' Grill next door, which is just as good.

There are hundreds of restaurants in the theatre district, and it's easy to get ripped off trying to save money. These all give value for the money and deliver great taste experiences.
