Posted: 5/18/04 at 3:34pmfor a nice inexpensive breakfast - go to the Renaissance Diner on 52nd and 9th. Nice Greek family operated business with clean atmosphere, kind and pleasant staff and great food (and if you're a member of AEA you get a 10% discount) For mexican, its gotta be Al Azteca across the street and half a block up. For Italian - Cara Mia on 9th at 46th(?) or within a block of there - all moderately priced and healthy choices!

For a unique breakfast or lunch experience, try the Edison Cafe - in the Hotel Edison on 47th between Broadway & 8th Ave.
Nicknamed "THe Polish Tearoom", this is the place where Neil Simon's recent flop "45 Seconds From Broadway" was set. It's the kind of place Max Bialistock would hang out at.
Last time I was there, I had a huge bowl of matzoh ball soup and an excellent hamburger, plus a coke, all for about 8 bucks.

Virgil's is one of my favorites too. Ribs and brews, umm umm! And great beans and slaw too. Best for lunch or after the show.
Tratoria Trecolori at 133 W45th is my favorite for Italian, read the Zagat review, I wrote it.
Danny's Grand Seafood (where Bangkok meets Broadway) on restaurant row is a great choice for Thai and/or seafood.

1) Carmine's - 44th St (across and down from Majestic). But make sure you have at least 2 people in the party, otherwise you'll have leftovers for a week! (Price and service is great - but it get very crowded after 4:30pm!)
2) Joe Allen's - 46th St Good "classy" pub food.
3) Famiglia's Pizza - not sure of the cross streets but it's a bit morth and across from Hershey's. Big slices with creative toppings. Not too pricy.
Edited to add:
4) Ellen's Stardust Diner - 50th-ish and Bway? Just a REALLY fun time, with waiters singing oldies and showtunes. You'll have a ball. (I'd recommend it after you see an evening performance, when everyone's getting a bit rowdier.)

Posted: 5/18/04 at 10:26pm^ Agreed. Cheesecake was meh and mudpie was rich but too filling. It's definitely not a "foodie" destination - better just for the pure entertainment value.

Avoid the Stardust. It's cramped and over-crowded and the prices have gone up... not to mention the food has gone downhill.
Shame too, cause years back I really enjoyed eating there.

Hey, 72nd is walking distance unless you're a big wimp.
Or just a quick jump on the 1,2,3, or 9. :)
There are actually a LOOOOOOOOOT of good restaurants on Columbus up in the 70s/80s.
My vote still goes for Cafe Mozart (70th, between Broadway and Columbus)... their Salveri's Revenge makes the happiest girl in the world.
...or I'd third Barrymore's. The food is delish and the atmosphere is great, and more importantly, the prices are reasonable.

Since other folks are mentioning stuff on Columbus, How about the Firehouse 522 Colunbus. Great nachos, good prices, outdoor dinning on warm evenings and to top things off friendly and not too $$$!!

Restaurants:
Firebird- Have a bellini before the theater very elegant.
(Honey Vodka is the signature drink)
Blue Fin- So hip it hurts but the great sushi and elegant decor is perfect for a date.
Ruby Foo's
Yodo of Japan- The best happy hour in the City. The Spicy Tuna rolls melt in your mouth and for three dollars you can't afford not to go.
