Do you ever get really really depressed after you finish a show?
The last performance of Bye Bye Birdie was Saturday (I was Rosie) and I'm completely depressed. I'm auditioning for A Midsummer Nights Dream at a local theater just to get on the stage again. BBB was the first musical I was in (though ive been a huge fan of them my whole life) and i know ill never get a lead role like that again. Am I going crazy or does this happen to lots of theater people?

Also, this summer, which of the following should I try out for?
I'm a sixteen year old female if that helps

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum
How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying
Pirates of Penzance
Pippin
Aida
West Side Story (really far away though)

i really don't know much about the first four. what's my best bet?

gah i'm so sad

*walks away humming "Rosie" and wishes her Albert were singing it to her*

"No two shows are alike in the making. Each show is a living piece of your life in a small unreal world with its own character and integrity; its own new set of memorable experiences and incredible happenings. You begin to love and adapt to its strangeness. Dreams harden into substance. Values come into focus. You wish it would never end. The dream world vanishes like mist before a rising sun; part of you vanishes with it. And back you land in the real world with a thud- fogged, uneasy, jittery, difficult to get along with. There is only one cure. A new show. A new, small unreal world; new visions, experiences, incredible happenings. Again you love it, adapt to it, wish it would never end. But end it does. Another part of you vanishes. That's show business."-Anonymous

Yeah I tend to get really depressed after a show that I'm in has ended, or even after seeing a show I've really wanted to see for the first time. I don't know why, maybe because you wait forever for that moment and then suddenly its over. I did this really great scene in a small show that I did with my summer class and even though it was a fairly small, one night thing I felt really fullfilled and satisfied at the end but that night after I got home I felt so sad because it was all over. Weird but true. :-P

Ah yes, the post-show despondency...I have become a victim of it on several occasions. As far as what show you should try out for next, Pirates of Penzance is an operetta and it's a really fun show!! The soprano lead is Mabel, the older alto lead is Ruth, pirate maid-of-all-work, and there are two small roles, Edith and Kate, for alto/mezzo. There is a female chorus and there are a lot of chorus numbers. Forum has more male leads than female but it's a silly, fun show.

Some of my closest friends and I were in a show and we had 5 shows that day. Dress rehearsal at 7 A.M. to the last performance ending at about 9:30. After the last show i was tired and done. The next day i was like I wanna get back up on stage and do it again. On Thursday we just had our cast party. Signed props and other stuff and watched our performance. Everyone just wanted to just get back up and do the show all over again. (its a choir show at my school i was on stage dancing not singing) so its not any good show, it is an original show with songs that the lyrics were just changed.

I think you should do Aida only because thats the one im most familiar with and I love it. It's a great show.

Do shows for a few years, you'll be jaded and bitter like I am and be GLAD when shows are over. :)

Depending on how they cast those shows....If you could play one of the daughters in PIRATES, you would have an lots of terrific fun. Ditto with WEST SIDE and PIPPIN if you are a dancer.

Your best bet is to audition for all of them and see what happens. Keep your options open. Some of my best on stage experiences came with shows I didn't initially have much interest in being part of.

I'd say try out for them all and see what you get! The worst that can happen is you're in the chorus*, which is still loads of fun!

*Keep in mind I'm trying to be motivating & inspirational here! And, assuming you were Rosie, you *should* make the chorus, at least, but just so you don't get your hopes up: DISCLAIMER: the worst that can *actually* happen is you don't make it, but gain 6 more auditioning expiriences to learn from! It's a win/pretend-you-win situation!

you should totally do either AIDA or How To Succeed, both are great fun shows to be a part of.

I suggest "How To Succeed" b/c I was in it (and auditioned w/o knowing too much about it) and it was fantastic! I played Hedy La Rue, which is probably the best role I've ever played (it's actually more of an acting part than a singing part) and the other two lead girl roles are great too!

I'm a bit confused, when you say you are auditioning for those shows, do you mean the actual professional shows or smaller versions of said shows that your local theatres are doing etc? I know, kinda stupid question but I just wasn't aware that you could audition for shows of that professional level at age 16 if that is the case. Anyways, my opinion on it is that Aida would be really fun to do but that could just be because I love the show so much. :-P
