because her boyfriend is afraid of commitment and runs away.
You need to try and see Avenue Q.
Kate Monster: A very special monster is in love with Princeton.
They are dating, he freaks out at a friends wedding and is searching for a true "Purpose" in life and is afraid of settling down with Kate.
Kate loves Princeton. She always dreamed of finding a boyfriend and she loves him.
Her heart is broken. We feel her pain.
You need to see Stephanie. She is perfect. It is one of the most moving songs and greatest performances I've ever witnessed (5 GLORIOUS TIMES)
Break a leg sweety!
Kate is very smart and has a giant heart!

The song also has an interesting progression, as Kate tries to be philosophical about her situation ("There's a fine, fine line between a lover and a friend"), but then she just breaks down and starts raging at Princeton, who has left ("And I don't have the time to waste on you anymore / I don't think that you even know what you're looking for"). You must understand that Kate has been screwed over by relationships before, and she cared most about Princeton. Princeton asks her for some time for him to sort his own things out, but Kate has a life of her own to plan. The song is not just about her relationship to Princeton, but all dreams and disappointments in her life ("You gotta go after the things you want while you're still in your prime").
YES. At that moment, it really sucked to be her.
But it all works out after all.
Smart Monsters rule the world.

Aymee Garcia kicks *ss when she performs this song
Blue Wizard has the interpretation down pat. It is also important to note that this is the only song in the show that is not meant to be funny in any way and actually opens the door to Act 2's sadder themes
