The dictionary defines 'rapture' as "...a feeling of intense pleasure or joy." And that is how I could most concisely describe my feelings while watching Sherie Rene Scott's virtual one-woman show EVERYDAY RAPTURE. It's 90 minutes of pure joy with a final 20 minutes that is actually very moving.
The show has pacing problems during the middle but it gets back on track immediately after. The 90 minutes flew by and I truly loved about 75-80 of them. Sherie Rene Scott is a true Broadway star...she not only has boundless energy and talent but oozes star quality from every pore. I found parts of EVERYDAY RAPTURE to certainly come off as vain but Scott is so likeable and entertaining that they didn't come off as narcissistic as they probably seem on paper. She's hilarious, touching, and totally real...with such a great resume and a track record of constantly strong performances, this is the best performance she's given thus far. Playing herself, she truly is giving quite the tour de force.
Lindsay Mendez, Betsy Wolfe, and Eamon Foley each shine in their small roles and provide strong backup for Ms. Scott.
Dick Scanlan and Ms. Scott's book is wonderful...the best new book of the year, in my opinion. *Ducks for cover.* Hilariously funny, honestly profound at times, and never anything but ridiculously entertaining, it really pulls out the stops without ever going over the top. Michael Mayer's direction is pretty swift (if it does run into some pacing problems halfway through) but somewhat run-of-the-mill.
Go see it...I think fans of Scott and of Broadway in general will have a better time than the Average Joe but it's still wildly entertaining and well-produced.
