A sweet, if uneven little play, MY WONDERFUL DAY is quite enjoyable although I didn't find it to be in the category of Ayckbourn's best as many have. I actually thought his direction was better than his writing here.
It's apparently being billed as a comedy but that's just not what it is at all. It has some funny moments but it's definitely not a comedy. Anyone going in expected a laugh-fest like NORMAN will be disappointed. At an hour and forty minutes with no intermission, it felt a big long and drawn out. And, for me, it sagged a little towards the midpoint in terms of pacing/plot but when it works, it's really lovely.
Ayckbourn's direction is sensational. He uses the small stage to the greatest effect (thanks also to Mick Hughes' smart but simple lighting designs) and handles each scene perfectly. It's as if we've really been dropped down in this house, watching the day unfold, much like Winnie.
Ayesha Antoine, Ruth Gibson, and Alexandra Mathie all really gave standout performances, even though the entire ensemble is strong. Those three, specifically, made an impression on me.
It's kind of a slight, enjoyable diversion, not without its flaws, but I liked it.
