Hey everybody,
I'm hardpressed to find a play and do a project on it from the 19th century that's by an American playwright...so when in doubt, ask the wonderful members of BroadwayWorld!
So...does anybody know of any good plays that are written in the 19th century by an American playwright?
Thanks!

Metamora which was written as a vehicle for Edwin Forrest
It is included in an anthology that we used for History of American Theatre in college.
I think the book is called Six Great American Plays.
Check www.abebooks.com
Its a paperback.
Edit: I just looked up Six Great American Plays on abebooks and there is one copy but there is no list of which plays are in the volume.
You might want to research plays by Clyde Fitch.
There's always "Our American Cousin" and "In Fashion."
Thanks for the suggestions, everybody! I'll be looking into all of those.

Fashion or In Fashion along with others were written by Mowatt (first names Anna Cora?), and she actually has a surviving body of work. She wrote popular comedies. Works by her ought to be comparatively easy to find.
As we all say these days, "Google Time".
There's a very good anthology of early American plays called "STAGING THE NATION: PLAYS FROM THE AMERICAN THEATRE 1787-1909". It includes the following:
The Contrast by Royall Tyler
2 version of Metamora (one by John A Stone, one by John Broughm)
Fashion by Anna Cora Mowatt
Uncle Tom's Cabin by George Aiken (this would be my recommendation for your project)
The Poor of New York by Dion Boucicault
Shore Acres by James Herne
Secret Service by William Gillete
The City by Clyde Fitch
All of these are good representations of American drama of the 19th C.
