Nathan & Matthew, when they went to yank the sign down in WHERE DID WE GO RIGHT? it didn't come down. They tried a second time and Nathan began giggle. Naturally, Matthew started. They smiled at each other and took deep breaths. They tried again... to no avail. This time Matthew started to gafaw. Nathan had to sit down on the floor. By now the whole audience is in stitches. He stood up and they chanted "1 2 3!" and yanked it as hard as they could. It fell, so did they and the sign covered them. It was perfect actually

Posted: 11/7/06 at 11:11amI saw the producers a week before nathan and matthew left the first time. they began to laugh and couldnt stop, nathan then says "sorry for the outburst next week you will have a finely trained british actor in this role". it was kinda funny!

Oh, I understand.
And now for my post to this thread:
What the about the "Who's my little accountant?" bit? That's an ad lib, isn't it?

Jim Borstellman, playing the gay choreographer, came down with a huge bulge in his tights and shoved it right into Nathan's face. The show stopped for about 10 minutes for him and the cast to regain composure.
It made it into the movie, I believe.

The night we saw it in 2001 (I think) the set wouldn't clear off the stage after the courtroom scene. They kept going into the ending, but behind them there were techies in t-shirts and shorts trying to get the wagons to move. They were trying to bring in the backdrop, but the set was in the way.
Finally, Nathan Lane started ad libbing like crazy and the crowd went crazy. I loved it. It was nice to see that the show wasn't so polished that it was canned!

According to Jeffry Denman in his book "A Year with the Producers," there was one time when Nathan Lane had trouble with the second time he said, "NEVAH PUT YOUR OWN MONEY IIIIIIIN THE SHOW!" So he burst out laughing and broke character and asked Matthew Broderick about the situation with Mariah Carey (she was big in the news at the time, I don't remember what for.) Then all of a sudden, he said, "I'm going to jump!" and pretends to jump out the window and screams and then says, "Don't worry, it's only two stories high!"
Incidentally, the line "Who do ya have to %^(& to get a break in this town" started life as an ad lib from Nathan Lane.

Posted: 11/7/06 at 5:31pmSadly I didnt get to see Nathan and Matthew.. but here in LA we had Martin Short as Leo and Jason Alexander as Max.. they ad libbed so much the audience was crying it was soo hysterical.. the best part came when they got Roger de Bris Elegant Upper Eastside townhouse..lol..they were on a roll and the entire cast couldnt handle.. it was live theatre at its most unpredictable.. btw they both really well in the roles..

I saw it last year with Brad Oscar and Hunter Foster (first back), and when they got to the "give me the books" part, they were like rolling around on the ground. Made at least three gay sex positions.
Absolutely hilarious.
The person who was playing Roger (I forget who, it wasn't Gary, he was filming the movie) kept going "OOOO!" whenever they moved. I was in the front row and was literally on the floor because it was like 2 feet away from me.

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this one which occured at the time TABOO was on:
(Office scene between Max and Leo).
Max (Nathan) : Never use your own money...it's Taboo!

I had two ad-libbed moments when I saw it
The first one was during the "I'm not gonna jump on you!!!" section of Scene 2. I couldn't tell you what happened exactly, but when Nathan bent over he had apparently hurt his back. Matthew thus slowly crawled out between Nathan's legs and Nathan walked over to his desk and sighed "8 more monthes"
Also for my performance, Nathan and Matthew cracked up so hard during rule "#1: never put you own money in the show" that Nathan couldn't even speak. He was laughing so hard that at one point he just opened the window and yelled "HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELLLLLLLLLLLPPPPPP!!!!"
When Nathan seemed to have redeemed his composure, Matthew very sweetly asked, "And rule #2"
To which Nathan answered, just as sweetly, "Who gives a sh*t"
Seems like that was a problem spot for them throughout their run. Would loooove to know THAT inside joke

Posted: 11/7/06 at 9:25pmThe bulge in the choreographer's pants wasn't an ad lib. Jeffry Denman (in the original cast) came up with it during a costume fitting, I believe. He stuffed some socks down his pants and they decided to incorporate it.
