If you want big and fun and touristy, head uptown on broadway to 50th-51st to Mars 2112. You take a little space shuttle motion ride before you go into the basement which is outter space. the staff stays in character as aliens and such. Expect NYC prices, but its cute and fun.

Ellen's Dinner is OKAY. Food is terrible and overpriced. The singing staff is hit or miss and the tables are TINY and crowded.

We received the worst. service. evah. at Ellen's Stardust Diner- the singing is cute and all, the food is basic diner food, but when you're part of a party of six, 5 of whom are current/former waitstaff (generally overtippers), talking about how much the service sucked, the service really did suck.

I don't have kids, so I don't really have any suggestions (is that Mars 2112 place any good?), but I just had to put in my no vote to Ellen's.

The food at Mars 2112 is overpriced (well...New York City prices) and not very good. I went there once and shant return.

Edit: You could always go to a place like Planet Hollywood. It's loud, but the food's good and in all my experiences has very fast service. It also has tons of movie props and costumes which would be fun for your kids to look at.

I think Virgil's BBQ is on 44th or 45th -- and if I remember correctly, so is the RR. That's gotta be my favorite restaurant ever. I live in California, but nothing out here compares to that place. Whenever I'm in the city, I'm there at least once. If kids like the whole BBQ thing (I'm sure they can get chicken nuggets or a burger), it might be a good choice for you.

Oh man, I want some ribs now.

John's Pizzeria on 44th St., next to the St. James Theater, two blocks away from TARZAN. It's situated in a former tabernacle, has decent food, and the kids will love you for it.

I can't remember the name of it, but it's a big place with Italian food (I think) on the corner of 46th and Broadway. Most of the seating is downstairs. I'm sorry that I can't be more specific, but if someone else knows the place that I'm talking about, just chime in...

Ellen's Diner was alright. I mean, the food wasn't gourment, but it wasn't unedible. The 50s nostalgia theme annoyed me. (It always does), although the service wasn't too bad.
Bubba Gump's really didn't impress me at all. Sometimes the touristy chain places can impress and the awful food, slow (almost dim-witted) service and loudness ruined Bubba Gump.
I generally try to avoid these touristy places since service and food isn't always great, plus they are quite overpriced. I can't help you on this one.

Bubba Gump is the greatest restaurant ever!

You can eat at Sbarro at every mall and airport you go to around the nation. Plus, everything from there (right down to their bottled juices) makes me sick.

Juniors is also a very good restaurant. I've eaten there a lot of times. Their cheesecake is delicious!
Jekyll and Hyde isn't very close to Tarzan, but it is a very good place. I took both of my cousins (One just turned 9 and the other is 5) last year and they loved it!

Get to the city very early and go across town to Serendipity.
The best place for kids. It is near Bloomies.

Ellen's stardust diner is so cute, and the service wasn't slow at all when I went there. Also, junior's is a good restaurant.

I second Serendipity's....

Planet Hollywood or Hard Rock.
Although they are in a lot of places, they are great in NY.
I like Mars 2112 or Jekyll and Hyde's. Food isn't awful, but its not amazing. It does have slightly high prices, but the decoration and entertainment is amazing, DEFINATLY where you should take a kid- they won't notice the bad food.
