I’ll be visiting NYC for a week in the beginning of March and I would like to see at least one or two Broadway Musicals. I’ve been reading up on lotteries and rush tickets and was hoping someone could help me figure a couple of things out.
Do I need to buy tickets to Chicago in advance, or are my chances with rush tickets pretty good? Do I really need to be there before 10, or are there often still tickets left later in the day?
Can anyone tell me more about the odds in the digital lottery for Aladdin & Book of Mormon? I would love to see Aladdin. I’ve seen Book of Mormon on my last trip, but for the price of a lottery ticket I would definitely like to see it again.
I’m a girl on a budget and won’t be able to afford everything I would like to see, so I’ll have to make some choices and maybe take my chances with the lottery on other shows. Any help with the questions above would be greatly appreciated! Any other great shows you would recommend?

You may be better off doing standing room for Mormon as well as digital lotto -- at least then you know you'll get in. ($27, cash or charge. 22-25 spots and a good view. Maybe a 2-hour wait.). Weekdays seem to be a lot easier for the latter, both for digital lotto and standing room.

You'll be fine getting rush for Chicago after 10am. The box office attendants are very kind and the seats are great!
The other poster is right about BOM, its still quite tough to get lottery tickets as quite a lot of people turn out. If you get into the standing room line as soon as you file your lottery vote you should be able to get those seats which are a real steal at 27$.
Personally I think I'd like to see shows that are newer and not such stalwarts as Chicago/BOM. This spring is plush with new plays/musicals. Great Comet from last fall. War Paint, Sunset Boulevard, Come From Away, Amelie, so much more. I enjoy seeing new work rather than long running shows and so prioritized that on my first trip knowing almost assuredly that the two shows you are looking at would be playing the next time I came. Enjoy yourself regardless of what you see! New York is so wonderful.

Thank you for your extensive answer!
I don't live in the US, so I'm not sure when and if there will be a next visit. I haven't seen most shows that have been running for ages, so I just try to make a selection of shows that I think I'll enjoy. Great Comet is on the list, as is Amelie (but that opens after our visit).
