I don't know this qualifies as "sad". Life goes on and Australia has any number of terrific artistic directors who can take over.

Kate Cherry, the director of the Black Swan Theater in Perth, comes to mind. She's directed several productions at STC and has years of involvement with the company.

Fair enough, Nicole. I'm sorry if I seemed to be telling you how you should feel. That is your choice, of course.

I'm not sure why you are sad, but I don't think we have to worry about the STC. It's the closest Australian equivalent to a "national theater" and is no danger of going under, as far I know.
