Isn't every year a sad year for the Broadway musical?
Basically, ever since the eighties, musical theater has been struggling as an art form. A generation ago, "The Producers" would have been considered a "good" show. Now, because of the state of things, it's considered brilliant.

Posted: 12/8/04 at 12:18amI don't think it's all that dismal! As far as advancing musical theatre as an art form, obviously it's not going to happen. But all in all, I think there enough decent things opening that won't make it any "worse" than last season.

Posted: 12/8/04 at 12:23amThe first half of the season has been slow. The Frogs closed with no extensions and Dracula just announced its closing. But the second half of the season will be better. The two competitors for the Tony are coming- Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and Spamalot

Posted: 12/8/04 at 12:32amI would agree with you on that. Ever since the Disnification of Broadway everything has been bad. But thankgod we have a media outlet like TV or Movie theatres where we can see the musicals we deserve. Phantom is coming to the big screen and Sweeney has been announced too. If you saw A Christmas Carol the Musical you would have been thrilled. It is certainly one of the most breathtaking and beautifully written and acted musicals of all time. So why go to broadway when you can see better ones for free on TV?

"anyone else agree? i mean, i know many shows have yet to open, but still, ugh. "
How stupid is this statement? First you say it's a sad year. The you say you know there are many more shows to open.
Did you really just join to post crap? If you have a valid opinion, share. You say absolutely nothing as to why this year sucks.
You want to make a statement, fine. Put some thought into it first.

Posted: 12/8/04 at 8:12amobvisouly enough people before you thought it was a valid enough point to post their thoughts, and half of them didn't give any explaination. and frankly, i don't think what i said deserves an explaination. what i said IS my opinion. and i didn't say this year sucked. i wasn't looking for an outlet to post my opinions, i was looking to hear others.

Posted: 12/8/04 at 11:02amI'm hoping for there to be an upset with the little musicals making it big. Like last year with Ave Q. We can hope that Light in the piazza, or Zanna, or SOMETHING transfering from offbroadway will do really well. Because as of now there isnt much (besides light in the piazza) that I am truly looking forward to!

Really? EVERYTHING?
"If you saw A Christmas Carol the Musical you would have been thrilled."
Didn't that originate at Madison Square Garden post-Disney (I honestly don't remember when it started)? And it was the same composer as Disney's Beauty and the Beast. It was around for a while.
