"And I just wanted to correct your stupidi... oh, sorry, IGNORANCE in spending anything more than 60 bucks for a ticket to RENT, even with the first lady of American theater as Mimi. There are discount codes everywhere... so save you allowance and look around cuz EVEN Mel B isn't worth that kinda money at this stage in RENT's existence."
I didnt know about the discount codes so kill me for it, everyone makes mistakes and learns from them, no one is perfect. Maybe to you she's not worth that kind of money but I'm a huge fan of hers so she is worth to me that much and I'm sure you won't understand with your ignorance anyway.

I could add this to your compilation that I made in the other thread, but I'll just do it here:
"I'm sure you won't understand with your ignorance anyway."
Considering we are on a BROADWAY board, talking about things which you have no idea about or would never bother to learn about, I hardly think *we* are the ignorant ones.

Well...She's certainly no Daphne Rubin-Vega.
But, hello? Who since her has been? Daphne originated the role, and quite brilliantly, I might add. No, Mel B is not nearly as good. But she's not entirely hateful, either. She used to be in a silly bubblegum pop group of singing girls (with power!). And no, she would never have been cast in the role based solely on her talent. But don't crucify her for it; she's not that bad. And I respect her decision to try to make it on Broadway, as opposed to, say, recording a crappy hip-hop solo album, modeling for Damon Dash, and taking advantage of a marriage to a world-famous soccer star in order to raise her profile in the USA.
I think what Mel B. is doing is respectable, I think it's a good role for her (at least she's not trying to play Roxie in Chicago or something equally inappropriate), and so perhaps we should give her the benefit of the doubt. It's not possible, is it, that she's the worst Mimi yet? After 9 years, I'm sure there's been a worse Mimi.
Mel B should do her best in the role. And her fans should ignore the haters. You're not going to change their minds anyhow. They're probably frustrated actors anyhow.
Break a leg, girl!

I understand that this is a "business" and I'm sure that bringing a name into Rent is great for ticket sales...and I'm all for that I suppose. Anything to bring in the people and keep Rent going. But it just makes me mad that there are so many talented people out there who have busted their asses their entire lives and could easily sing the part. I'm sure there are also a number of pop stars who could handle the role, vocally. Now, I haven't seen Mel B yet, I only know what I heard. But after all of the fans suggesstions that she play Mimi...didn't they audition her first? Did they just give her the role without even hearing her?? I mean, give her the shot, sure. But if she's not up to par, then they should have set their sights elsewhere. This isn't summerstock. This is Broadway. Producers should only go SO FAR to try to bring in some extra bucks...
Tell me when Karmine is on as Mimi again. I'll run there. Now THAT'S a voice worth my money, name or not!

Posted: 4/26/04 at 8:27amthank you, Sully and Gothrock, for the rational, objective responses to this "controversy"... honestly, nobody seems to be willing to give an inch in their opinions, either for or against, and really, why should they, with all the personal, hateful flame-throwing going on? there was an earlier post reagarding JasonX's growing interest in Broadway because of Mel B's appearance... shouldn't this be a welcome result? true, there are established stars who could sing RINGS around Mel, but how many would attract a NEW audience to Broadway?

localonecrew...why do you always feel the need to see the bad in everything and everyone? You just simply come on here and fight with everyone / gossip about what manley popes dressers next door neighbor told you. If you are a business professional as you stated numerous times, one would think as an adult you'd be a bigger person and not come here with sour grapes. So what if Mel B isn't Daphne or isn't tony winning material. If people like her, they will go see her anyway. Me personally, I don't care either way but it's just getting a little annoying. This is exactly what the worst part of the business is... the adults, the people who have made it and the people who make others look bad to attempt to make themselves look better. I think I've grown up a bit over the last year...especially with my previous experiences on the broadway.com boards. Learn from it and learn from what these people..our fellow board readers and friends will say back to you. It might seem like a large, large circle of bway out there..but, in reality kind sir...it's a small as a pea. You keep saying you "hear this" and "that" over at the Neder, someone is going to remember they told you...read what you post all over and finally it's going to haunt you.

you all are sick and do not understand. no one cares that it's mel b that people are professing to worship. it's the FACT that this is the only reason they're here even tho they're not broadway fans. take your unintelligible criticism somewhere else.
