how much time and money do you think goes into "re-creating" the sets for the tony award performances. also, do the designers themselves design the scaled down sets for the awards ceremony. it definitely seemed like kevin adams incorporated some additional colored bulbs and fluorescents for the spring awakening set. and the set piece for grey gardens was pretty monstrous.

It costs a lot of money to perform on the Tonys. I know that from all the talks I went to on the Tonys. That said-the set for GG is monstrous in the show. It appeared to be the same but may have been scaled up to fit that stage as opposed to the Kerr. It didn't appear to be any larger.
As for SA's lighting, I'm not sure if they added more. It's a much bigger stage than the O'Neill, so they may have decided to add more.

I actually thought the stage was pretty bare all night during the performances. The only "big" set pieces were the Grey Gardens front door and the Curtains false proscenium, which are both east to fly in. I was somewhat surprised that they didn't bring more set pieces in.

What about the Spring Awakening brick wall and pipes? Can't forget that one.

And the 110 picnic set and sun...

I too found the sets to be lacking this year when compared to past performances, such as The Light in the Piazza, Spamalot, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Spelling - wow all from 2005.

Because a picnic table is such a groudbreaking set piece. Very difficult to move in. Was the sun there? I didn't even notice, but it's still minimal regardless.

Who were those people sitting on stage during the Spring Awakening performance?

I thought the sets for Grey Gardens and SA were PERFECT. If not for the size of the stage I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference.

With the people sitting on stage, I thought for a second the SA performance was taped.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

all the performances were taped at the rehearsal.
but SA's was live because at the rehearsal the big kid and the kid who sings the 3rd verse of Bitch of Living's mics did not work

who told you they are tapped...that is false friend.

the only one that was tapped was the chorus line opening outside.

The performances ARE all taped during the run-through earlier in the day. But the taped versions only serve as a back-up in case something goes wrong during the live show.

Yeah, I didn't think Grey Gardens came off that well in the show. But it's a hard show to sell unless you understand the background of the characters. But I would have liked to see her sing "Around the World."

I was sorta dissapointed by the Grey Gardens performance as well. Also, I don't know how it sounded on TV, but the sound for it live was TERRIBLE.

I thought that the sun was just eyeblinding. I wanted to see Audra, but w/big orange thing in the back, I had to squint.
