The only time it was on Broadway was in the 85-86 Broadway season. At the time, there were some good articles in theater tech magazines that explained the rain process.

It has only been on Broadway once and that was in 1985-1986. It was in my opinion beyond horrible. It has different songs a slightly differnt plot and why Twyla thought she could direct and choreograph that was beyond me. It is not the regional version that is used now. The regional version follows the film very closely with the addition of 'What's Wrong With Me?' that Lina Lamont sings (which is effing brilliant). If you get a chance to see it, go. If you are a fan of the film you will not be dissapointed.
I remember saying to myself after seeing the Broadway production, "Well, Twyla Tharp will never work on Broadway again."
Another lesson in never saying never...

My high school *tried* to do the show this last year, and I personally thought it was horrible...
The audience loved it, but I was not a fan of it..lol.
I was just singing "What's Wrong With Me?" today. Great song
The Lina on the cast recording is hillarious.
The show was on Broadway at the Uris (now Gershwin) Theater in 1986 following a brilliant and very successful run in London at the London Palladium starring Tommy Steele and an amazing man named Roy Castle (sadly deceased) who played Cosmo. While sining "Be A Clown" (which they did instead of "Make Em Laugh" for some sort of legal reasons), he ran up the walls and did flips like Donald O'Connor WHILE JUGGLING FIVE BALLS and TAPDANCING and he NEVER dropped a single ball during any performance I saw!!!!
The first time I saw the show, I was sitting in the front row. I happened to look into the pit and saw the orchestra donning rain slickers. Why, I wondered? Then Tommy Steele started singing "dooodle-ooo-dooo-dooodle-doodle.do-da-lo-do...." and it began to rain. The water hit the stage, bounced up and I and everyone in the front row (and not the musicains) got soaked.
BTW, the "rain" was water mixed with milk - the only thing that would show up under the bright lights (and it smelled).
Water mixed with milk? Interesting. A community theatre in my city isputting this on in the upcoming season. I am interested in how it will turn out, as it is a very small, dinner theatre. Any more info or articles on how the rain was done?

i just finished music directing this show at our local theater. it was a disaster. not only were the leads terrible actors, one of who sang in completely classical opera voice lol it was hilarious. and the rain system never worked so it looks like people peeing from the fly rails. the water leaked into the audience and every night the cast was backstage with towels and a wet vac trying to clean up during a 30 minute intermission. why 30 minutes? because there was so much water it couldnt be wiped up in 15 lol. during the second act, the piped dripped the entire time, so during broadway melody and all other scenes in act 2, water still fell on actors randomly. it was a mess. yet...the audience loved it. i'll never understand
Apparently, at the first onstage rehearsal of the show in London, the rain was totally invisible under the lights. Then some old-timer in the cast said they used milk back in the 30's. So they got a huge quantity of milk but forgot to refrigerate it, so the next night they basically sprayed sour cream on the actors and stunk out the hose. Then they mixed it with waterand chilled it and voila.
And BTW, the show was wonderful. I brought my mom over from Canada (she was from Londan, a war bride) and she LOVED it. And of course, Tommy Steele was amazing.
lol- great story allofmylife! I could totally see the horrific possibilities of spoiled milk in that situation.
