The whole point is that she doesn't become and never is wicked (except when fooling around with Fiyero). It's the perception the Wizard, et al, want us to accept.

In the song "Thank Goodness" Madame Morrible is spreading lies and telling everyone that Elphaba is Wicked. Everybody believes her, and although Glinda knows it's not true she doesn't do anything to correct it, so everybody believes the lies.
She never is really Wicked...just misunderstood.

PERFECT..that is what i was getting from the recording..i havent been able to afford to see the show..but thought the plot was very familiar..so not a good versus evil story...and i love the song Defying Gravity..if they can showcase that somewhere..they ought to soon..its amazing..i.e. on the tonys

In the book, Elpheba's mother cheats on her husband with a troll. For that reason, the child is born geeen.

Defying Gravity MUST be performed at the Tonys
Joel Gray sings some of "Wonderful" then Kristen Menzel do some of "Popular" and it ends with a transition to "Defying Gravity" as the cast comes out for that song.
SO IF YOU CARE TO FIND ME,
LOOK TO THE WESTERN SKY!

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Why Wonderful?!?! Yeah I know its Joel Grey but that song is not nearly as good as Popular or Defying Gravity, as you mentioned, or most of the other songs I've heard on the CD for that matter. You need to sell it to those casual Bway audiences. The best way to do that is to make sure Idina and Kristen get their face time. They both have INCREDIBLE voices and they definitely will appeal to the average Joe and Jane! Joel is a theatre legend but its not his show.

I don't remember reading that Frex cursed her because of not being male.
I think in the show, it's different't, though. I know Elphaba's mother cheated on her husband with some man who tempted her into drinking a green potion of some sort, so that's why, I believe.

Careful, all. Elphaba's genetic history is a major, major plot point in both the novel, and the 2nd act of the show. I'd advise anyone who posts here to be generous of spirit towards those who might be holding tickets. I was happy to see that the plot twists were withheld from the CD booklet.

OK, that was either really stupid on your part or just plain rude. Why would you say who her Father is when there are a lot of people who haven't seen the show yet?!
Even if it is in the book, not everyone reads the book before seeing the musical.

I'm with you, Theaterbaby. Time for some to have enough courtesy to at least use what most other boards use: "Spoiler." Shame on anyone for tossing off a major plot reveal in so cavalier a fashion. I personally think it indicates a total insensitivity to those who may want a coupla surprises for their hundred bucks.
