"OMG! I apologize one hundred times. I typed that at 2:00 in the morning and wasn't even thinking. PLEASE forgive me?"

Well, you could go back and edit the post to remove the spoiler?

And I didn't know I felt so strongly. Yikes. I came off like an anti-spoiler fundamentalist, huh?

Why not just go back in, and delete the post? Unlike real life, here we get to take things back.

The CD offers all lyrics, but no summary. Wisely, I think. Very few shows are as enhanced as much as this one from the audience knowing next to nothing about the suprises. The songs do reveal the romantic developments, but not the major twists. And the musical sequences with plot turns edit out most reveals. This doesn't really hurt the score (if you LIKE the score), though it reduces the stakes in places, particularly in "Defying Gravity," which lacks some of the the immediacy it as on stage.

so...WICKED

I suggest that everyone read the novel whether they have seen the musical or not. The novel has a multi-layered plot that goes much deeper into character development and motivation than a 2.5 hour musical ever could. You'll actually appreciate the musical more if you read the book the first. But be warned, it is not an easy read. It is a morality tale of good vs. evil, choice and responsibility, with a good measure of religion, politics, sex, class struggles, and even a pogrom thown in.

OT a bit: I agree, Logan. The novel is a stunning piece of work, but tonally 180 degrees from musical comedy. You don't laugh. Elphaba's stark, outcast story drives it, and Glinda disappears for 100 pages, never acquiring the (comedic) weight she has in the Chenoweth character. I think that had it been translated as written, we'd have LES MIZ, or a dark opera. Without giving too much away, the way the issue of terrorism is handled also demands much of the reader. I couldn't stop thinking about the implications of events half-way through the novel. The book also manages to layer in an entire motif about the evolution of relgion, from paganism through Christic revelation, with New Age trappings and fundamentalism thrown in for good measure. To say that Maguire's anthropological vision of the land of Oz is "ambitious" is an understatement.

I enjoyed the novel very much. Wrote a college paper on it. It does get a bit over-the-top freakish in places. I remember something about a drunken orgy during the college years. It's been a while since I read the book. I'll pick it up again.

On a side note, you did not post that spoiler at 2am....it was 10pm! So unless you live in like London or something, there is not really a time difference that can take you from 10pm Eastern Standard time to 2am.
And, you apologize and yet still leave it there. Edit the post already! There may actually be some people who haven't seen it yet and you could spare a few who want to be surprised.
