Hi everyone.
I find most CDs today from the recent Broadway crowd to be heavily synthesized and lacking in warmth so my tastes tend to veer to the more obscure Broadway performers who only recorded solo endeavors on LPs and 45s (remember those?):
Robin (HENRY, SWEET HENRY) Wilson. Robin recorded 2 solo albums for A&M back in the late 60's. GREAT production values and she sounds a bit like Vikki Carr at times.
Donna (SHENANDOAH) Theodore. As far as I know she only recorded 45s but what a powerful voice! She DID record a showtune on one of her 45s: "If I Can't Make Love To You...." from SALVATION.
Paula (GOLDEN BOY) Wayne. No solo LPs but she did record many 45s in the 60's that show off her husky and sexy voice.
Beverly (HAIR/THE ME NOBODY KNOWS) Bremers. Beverly has an amazing "cry" in her voice that took her to the TOP 20 in the 70's with the beautiful "Don't Say You Don't Remember" written by INNER CITY'S Helen Miller and Eve Merriam. This song, among others from her first and only solo LP, can be found on the CD THE BEST OF BEVERLY BREMERS.
Dorothy (FOLLIES) Collins. Her 45's are alot of fun to listen to as she "covered" many of the rock and roll hits of 50's. She's so sincere in her efforts that you can't help but love her for trying.
Dana (WAIT A MINIM!) Valery. Terrific voice.....a sorta Dusty Sprinfield wannabe. She recorded both solo LPs and 45s in the 60's and 70's but never quite made it.
Eileen (ANYTHING GOES/TENDERLOIN/FIORELLO) Rodgers. The recently departed Ms. Rodgers recorded many 45s (and 1 solo LP) in the 50's and early 60's. She even had a couple of Top 100 hits. She sounds like Teresa Brewer at times. Most of these recordings can be found on the recently released CD THE BEST OF EILEEN RODGERS.
That's all I can think of at the moment!
Buck
The ones I have that I've absolutely worn out I play so much--
Kristin Chenoweth--Let Yourself Go
Brent Barrett--the Kander and Ebb Album
Audra McDonald--Way Back to Paradise
Patti LuPone--Matters of the Heart
Christiane Noll--A Broadway Love Story
Linda Eder--It's No Secret Anymore
Barbara Cook--At Carnegie Hall
Any number of Merman albums I have
And I'm sure there are others.
I think Mandy patinkin's album Experiment is full of some really great music. im not the biggest fan of his habit of flowing right from song to song with no transition, but here, somehow it works for me. Also he does not try to ever blow the top off a building by screaming or belting too loudly. I also think that Michael Crawford's Christmas Album is one of the best christmas albums around. It has the most tbeautiful songs, not the usual hokey crap. And no matter what anyone says about him or his singing, his recording of O Holy Night is probably the best recording of that song you'll ever hear. He has the perfect voice for it, and for the rest ofthe album.

Someone mentioned Idina Menzel's "Still I Can't Be Still" YES! This album is fantastic. In case you're interested, she apparantly went into the studio a few months ago to crank out a mini album to sell at the Gershwin while she's in Wicked.

Here's another related question:
Which Broadway stars (who have NOT recorded solo albums) would you like to hear on a solo album?
