a friend of mine just called me from inside of studio 54 - she's watching threepenny opera tonight, where apparently the computers went down...? and the microphones aren't working, so the show is not only 25 minutes late, but will start without microphones or sound amplification. ahhh! my friend is sitting in the balcony too, so not even sure if she's going to hear anything.
i wonder if they'll refund tickets...? that's really disappointing, especially since the show is closing so soon. i wonder what the usual protocol is for something like this?

Posted: 6/20/06 at 8:28pmIt goes to show what actors are made of. If they're "REAL" (trained) actors, they won't need mics.

Posted: 6/20/06 at 8:32pmThats so unfair of you to say. It has GOT to be hard to project out to the balconies in a Broadway house... there are no Ethal Mermans anymore... and the orchestrations in modern day musicals don't even allow an actor to be able to project over them

Posted: 6/20/06 at 8:35pmThat's really awful that that happened!! I hope it's fixed soon!! Well, I think Ana and maybe Brian will probably be the only ones with the voices to reach the balcony sans microphones.

Posted: 6/20/06 at 8:35pmIt's perfectly fair. Judy Kaye and Don Corren managed to do it during Souvenir (they both said they don't use mics). Granted it's hard to do it over a huge orchestra (the sound problems at DRS of late has proved that), but with the kind that 3penny has?

Posted: 6/20/06 at 8:40pmYankee, all debate aside, the orchestra at Threepenny is excitingly large and full. Loved it!

Posted: 6/20/06 at 8:43pmi know, i'd be disappointed too! especially for people like my friend who only had tonight free for the rest of the week, or people who were only in NY for that night or something like that. i guess things like this happen though.

Posted: 6/20/06 at 8:46pmI hope they figure out what happened tonight and make sure the system (or whatever crashed) can last until Sunday. Especially b/c they have 2 shows tomorrow! And I'm trying to go back on Friday.

Posted: 6/20/06 at 8:49pmI'll be there Saturday night. And I'm coming in just to see this show. Hopefully everything will be fine by then, not so much for me, but for what my parents spent for this trip...

Posted: 6/20/06 at 9:14pmCould be. The sound was abominable on Wednesday. It was like the mics weren't properly attached or on. Everything was swallowed up.

Posted: 6/20/06 at 9:57pmthe only thing i remember being drown out by the orchestra was parts of The Army Song. Other than that, I thought it was fine.

I was there tonight. There show was not cancelled; however, when my friend and I left to try to get refunds, we were offered refunds. Most people in the audience, however, clapped when the announcement was made that there would be no microphones used during the performance.
I wonder if they would be happy after the performance however. Actors/actresses on Broadway are not trained to project to the back of the house without the use of microphones. Oh well. My friend and I decided to try to go see it another time before Sunday when hopefully the sound is up and running. The girl at the box office said that they fully expect it to be working tomorrow, since it was working fine on Sunday (yesterday was dark)
