(I'll be talking about some plot stuff, but the show has been out for a while so I wasn't sure if I should include the 'spoilers' or not...)
I'm freshly moved to NY and still doing the job search thing (three interviews lined up on Mon/Tue, fingers crossed :)), so I decided to try some lottos tonight. Tried Rent first- I have had "La Vie Boheme" running through my head all week- and lost, so I made my way up to Spelling Bee, which, (third time trying now), I finally won.
Loved it!! I was worried that it would be too 'short,' with the no intermission and all, but it was a perfect length. And so funny- you would think that maybe the whole definition/sentence bit would get old after a few times, but nope, not really. I don't listen to cast recordings before I see shows, but I have read about some stuff on this board...
- First, lotto seating is random, not all in one section. Is it always like that? I was in the second to the last row on stage left, there were lotto line people in the row behind me, in the last two rows on stage right, and in the first two rows on the floor. I missed some of the stuff that happens either right up front center stage, or all the way in the back center stage, but seats were like 95% fine
- There were a lot of empty seats. Like half of the last two rows in the center, and various empty pockets of two, four, six seats here and there.
- I loved the way the lobby was decorated like an elementary school, with the slogan posters and everything- I hadn't read about that anywhere, and I was having serious 6th grade flashbacks. And that list of previous years winners!
- I knew two songs by name, My Unfortunate Erection and I Speak Six Languages, that I'd heard about and was expecting to hear, so when he lost I was all distracted waiting for Chip to come 'back' since I hadn't heard his song yet. I didn't know about Jesus, though.
- I loved the one audience player getting the word 'cow' bit- ours was a kid who did the whole 'can I have it used in a sentence' bit. The sentence was "Spell cow." heh.
- They had to call the last audience member up twice in a row (since he kept spelling stuff correctly) in order to finally eliminate him- like you could totally tell that they couldn't move on until he was gone. I wouldn't be surprised if the last word they gave him wasn't even a real word. :) He got a mini-standing ovation from various sections of the audience.
- the first audience member eliminated missed 'jihad.'
- Logainne's Supreme Court line got the second highest applause after the awesome audience speller. Her lisp was completely distracting at first, but then I got into it.
- I am totally craving a juice box.
I'm sure there's more, but that's what I've got off the top of my head right now. :)
