That always surprises me - how people who rely so much on their voices can smoke - but to each his own.
GirlfriendfromCanada, the smoke at Cabaret bothered me too. I was surprised they could all sing with all that smoke. And when I saw Adam, he was smoking like you wouldn't believe, and then singing seconds later. I don't know how he did it.... I guess maybe he didn't actually inhale it. Who knows?

Have you guys ever seen the documentary of the cast recording of Company? Everyone, and I mean everyone, was smoking. Sondheim, Stritch, the technicians, everyone. And that recording turned out okay, didn't it?
I hate smoking as much as the next person, but it is possible to sing well despite it.
Well honestly, doesn't it sound like Stritch has smoked since she was 6?
I thought the smoke in broadway shows were fake or like herbal smoke stuff. Is it always the real stuff?

Not always... I know that if the actor or actress really smokes they tend to use their own cigarettes (at least from some smoking actors and actresses I know)....
If in Heaven you don't excel, you can always party down in hell...
Hah! Does anybody else just find it really funny to try and picture that?
it is difficult to believe that an actor/actress would be required to smoke if they got a part in cabaret (when it was open
)

Why is that strange? In their contract it stated that the girls weren't allowed to shave either...

I can understand her point though. I mean, there is a big difference between not shaving your pits, and having to smoke at least three cigarettes and one cigar a show. I know there are plenty of people who wouldn't mind it, but given it could lead to health and vocal problems (and basically weeds out anyone with allergies or any kind of asthma), it would definitely be something I'd have to seriously consider when deciding if I wanted to take the role or not.
This is so OT, but TheGirlInTheFrock, your new icon makes me exceedingly happy.

That Mary Martin... always so holier-than-thou! Those chorus nuns should have outed her as revenge. I bet a lot more people would have complained to the Catholic Church when they found out Mary and Janet Gaynor were donut bumping!
LuvTheEmcee: thanks!! i see you went back to that phenominal pic for ur icon. I kept trying to get differnet pics to work for my icon but it never came up .. for some reason the last one i had worked so i didnt question it .. so i finally figured out how it worked so i found a fav pic of mine!! haha
haha, I'm glad you did. And yes, Emcee Adam has made his long-awaited return.
I am amazed at singers who smoke - actually, I'm amazed at anyone who smokes. To me, it just says that they have no self-respect, if they're willing to pollute their bodies that way. It's like when I watch these guys at the gym spending 1-2 hours a day working out and getting all pumped and beautiful, and then stepping outside to light up - obviously its all about outward appearances for them and not about being a long-living, healthy individual.

I wouldn't go so far as to judje anyone's self-respect on whether they do or don't smoke cigarettes. It's not healthy to make such negative comments. You could have a heart attack.

I have to say that I don't really care whether she smokes or not (I've got a lot of friends who do - and they're singers as well) but i do have to say that the wardrobe mistress inside me is screaming because cigarette smoke is sooooooo bad for the costumes. ack!

Yeah, I'd be more worried about the costumes. It's your business if you want to smoke, but people shouldn't be smoking in costume. Isn't that a big rule, along with not eating in your costume ?

I agree with Bakerswife and jessebelle -- no surprise about the nicotine intake, but to smoke in costume??? I was taught that was tantamount to heresy. Especially with what some of those costumes cost.
And if this was during the second act, my question is when in the world did she have time to step out for a cig? The second act of GYPSY is very "Louise heavy"...the only time I can think of a window of opportunity is during "Rose's Turn". And she makes an entrance immediately following.

Yes, but that is a pretty long window - 6 minutes, as ItstheM said.

i think it's more important to have a satisfied person than a satisfied costume. Obviously they know that over at gypsy.
