"Give the music another listen. It's brilliant and even melodic. Of all the shows I saw this year it is ghd that I play repeatedly.
Groundhog Day is the first show I've ever seen more than twice (went last week for the 3rd time). Besides for the entertainment factor, there's so much meaning in it to unpack - the messages of really being part of the world that surrounds you, being better because of the people around you, being able to really *see* the people for who they are and not what you want/expect them to be, and most centrally, the realization that "the only way to better days is" *not* "through tomorrow" but in truly living this day... And the fact that Andy Karl had his whole overcoming-injury story with this show adds a moving fourth dimension to the show's inspiration.
I love shows that make me want to be a better person, or do more in my life. GHD fits the bill more than any other show of the season.

Agreed. I think that's why DEH didn't resonate with me. When I was 14 years old I probably would have been all about Evan's story, but as a jaded adult I connect much with Phil's.
Evan is all about himself, and the lesson he learns is very self-centered. (It's a GHD thread so I'm not going to debate DEH's story.)
Phil is all about himself, but lesson he learns is about the world around him.

I saw it twice on my last trip - loved it both times and agree with those who say that you grasp more meaning and depth (and enjoy the music more) the second time around. I've only heard the score in the theatre and yet find myself humming it quite a bit throughout the day. Funny, I felt the same way about the music in Matilda - it grew on me the more I heard it.
I've seen all the shows that opened this past season (except CFA) and Groundhog Day is the one I would recommend to most of my friends. It's funny, incredibly creative, and a great character transformation from beginning to the end.

Andy is a consummate professional. I can't image he'll be out unless there is a medical issue. I

And even if there is a medical issue.
I am currently listening to this recording for the first time. I like it SO MUCH more than I thought I would. It seems like a really charming show. I would love to see it tour.

I think you're onto something — there's a bias against comedy in theater (and film) even though comedy is much harder to do well. And this show is not just funny - it's deeply moving and thought-provoking too. And, yes, maybe people dismissed it a bit since the film is so well known. They think the show will feel like yesterday's cultural news when the piece actually builds to greater heights significantly beyond the original.

He is such a class act. Saw him in Legally Blonde when I was in middle school and got to chat with him about it at the stage door back in May - it was raining and he still came out to sign! He's such a good guy

They gave a great performance at Bway in Bryant Park today. Was happy to see Andy up there (he wasn't at Stars in the Alley). Looked like he was having a good time, or he's really great at faking it! He really takes any performance to a whole other level. Was fun to hear "Nobody Cares" outside the theater.
Funny thing, Ray sang "shoot" instead of "****" but Andy still sang "masturbated". Ha.
