tre wicked

well, i saw 'wicked' tonight. i must say that i was pleasantly surprised. i found it quite enjoyable. ms. menzel was in fine voice and was surprisingly affecting, glinda was fun, george hearn didn't astonish me, but he was quite serviceable. same for joey macintyre. sean mccourt was his usual solid self. oh, and that one playing 'boq', super duper.

we saw the morrible understudy, who was sublime, the nessa rose understudy who was terrif, the understudy for the monkey, the understudy for the midwife and the understudy for the witch's mother. lol sheesh! they were all terriffic, but my pal made me ROLL when we opened the playbills, saw all the notices and he exclaimed: "Jeeeeezzz, could anyone ELSE have phoned in tonight, d'ya think?"

Anyway, I didn't find ALL the music forgettable. The production design was engrossing, as were the costumes. Cilento's 'choreography' once again did nothing for me. Who keeps hiring this man? Swell dancer, but are all his moves 'swirl, swirl, pose. Swirl swirl pose?'

Anyway, hat's off to Mantello for another treat. Kudos Herr Directore! 'Love Valour', 'Man of No Importance', etc. Keep up the exemplery work, Joe.

PS - special Broadway Cares curtain speech treat 2nite. Macintyre convinced Boq to come downstage and do 'the lollypop guild' # from the MGM film. He did and it brought the house down. He nailed it all, inflection, blocing, etc. I don't know if they usually beg him to do this, but I screamed.

Boq = Christopher Fitzgerald

re: tre wicked

....and indeed, Christopher Fitzgerald IS Super Duper:) Who was the Nessa understudy you saw, do you remember?
There's always room for pathos - and jazz hands.

re: tre wicked

prob. Christy Candler? Right??

I saw her as Nessa a few weeks ago. She was pretty good.

ditto on the choreography...THE worst thing about Wicked...

Glad you enjoyed the show. Saw it with the original cast in April. I agree that the choreography was nothing to scream about. And the number "Wonderful" didn't knock me off of my feet but I didn't really care because I was finally seeing Joel Grey live and in person. Wish it had been in another show with a bigger oart, but hey, I saw him! A most entertaining show with some nice moments and I like all of the music.

I think the OZ choreography is supposed to be well...odd and non-conventional...I think it complemented the show

re: tre wicked

What were they selling for the BCEFA stuff? And for how much?
#9

re: tre wicked

Theyre selling a Signed poster for 100, and a Wicked Cook book that the cast put together (JLT offered Pink goes good with Green Cake, and Idina offered Elphabagels-ha.) I think it was 50? I can't remember.

A little OT- but another thing, Idina seemed to spunky, outgoing and silly during the BCEFA speech at the end. She said to the audidence "Did you guys totally see me trip on my way down for my curtain call?" and was totally cracking herself and everyone up--then does she transform into anti social shy gal at the Stage Door? That was confusing.

re: tre wicked

I have to agree with the choreography - and not just for this show, any show WC does is the same - "spasmodic" as one review called it. I remember back during Tony time I was reading some article or another and it said how last years best choreography nominees were a joke and that the award should be for WORST choreography ever. I thought it was funny, but only found WICKED's to be exceptionally bad. I do like his choreogaphy of WHAT IS THIS FEELING, but the rest is so random. I felt that way about AIDA too - such great music and amazing dance breaks, you'd think the dancing would be...well...good!

re: tre wicked

hi kids. yes christy candler was the nessa u/s. she was ok. didn't WOW me, but she was ok.

yeah, the BCEFA stuff were a $100 poster, the $50 cast cookbook (featuring 'munchkin balls', or something like that, which prompted the lollypop guild #). i assumed the lollypop guild was something they begged him to do every night and he graciously appeased the mod. i could be wrong. but sheesh, ms. menzel fell APART with wild laughter.

i had to laugh as ms. menzel and glinda seemed to just laugh & gab during the beginning of the curtain speech. they seemed to be comparing their manicures....seriously. then they got into another little chat-fest and were doing something with their costumes sleeves. i think that one of their dresses got snagged on the others?

ms. menzel seemed quite amiable. if she gets shy or bitchy at the stage door, i can imagine certain nights she just wants to get home. i mean, it was loopy. my pal and i were able to toss some cash into a BC bucket and head-out before the TONS of people began to stream like mad out of that big Gershwin barn. people ran like IDIOTS from the lobby to the stage door barricades, where the bored cops and stage door dude were already bracing themselves for insanity. the group was getting stupid as we walked past, and the final curtain had just come DOWN. breathe, people, breathe.

after singing that score 8 times a week, i'd wanna get home to Taye Diggs, too. lol did u all hear/see funny things during the bows/BCEFA speech when you saw it?

Wow--nice to hear Idina being social--even if it's just on stage!

re: tre wicked

Odd and bad are 2 different things...The Wicked choreography is BAd...Wayne Cilento has always done mediocre work, and I think it is quite apparent when you see Wicked...You know guys, I love Wicked too, but it's not perfect...

re: tre wicked

I found Mr. Cilento's choreography for "The Who's Tommy" quite interesting and, for lack of a better word, good.

re: tre wicked

Yeah Idina was acting so crazy when I saw them in the curtain calls. Its like a display of all the inside jokes that we the audience will never know. She was attacking JLT trying to kiss her the whole time, and was laughing about the tripping thing.

Anyway Ive never been to the stage door, even after seeing Wicked 4 times (any stage door for that matter). I agree--I feel like they cast should be left alone, to get dressed, go home and relax-I never want to bother them after the show-you know? Theyve worked hard enough-who wants to deal with screaming kids? Anyway Im not one of those people that approach celebs on the street either. They are normal people too, and they want to lead normal lives, go shopping, eat in restaurants, and just chill out. Just my opinion. :)
