I was searching the board and I know this has been asked before, but I thought I might as well ask again in case information has changed, so who are good voice teachers in NY? The people I've heard of and am currently looking into are Liz Caplan, Adrianne Angle, and the SingersForum. Anyone have any thoughts about any of them? Also, I hear the name Joan Lader a lot, but I can't seem to find contact information for her. Does she only accept students who have been reffered to her? Anyway any help (including contact info) would be really appreciated!
Patti Cohenour is said to be amazing.
I've heard the same about Patti Cohenour, but remember that she's probably returning to Seattle once The Light in the Piazza closes.
David Sabella-Mills is wonderful! He's tough, but he'll do wonders for your voice. His website is http://www.sabellamills.com/index.html.
David is a vocal technique teacher, but if you are looking for a vocal performance teacher Bob Marks is great! His website is http://www.robertmarks.com/.
Do you have contact information for her? or a website? Thanks!
Patti Cohenour is at patticohenour.com
I've heard good things about David Sabella-Mills. Judy McLane [currently Tanya in Mamma Mia] apparantly also teaches voice, but I can't find any contact info on the web.
Go over to the NATS website (www.nats.org). It is a site for the National Association of Teachers of Singing, and there is a search you can perform for NATS voice teachers in your area (hint: search by state. Zip codes are too specific).
Whatever you do - don't go to the singers forum - yikes.
Melissa Hart is fantastic, and I've heard great things about Victoria Clark.
If you are ever looking for someone to help you with your acting of the piece, take Andy Gale's Acting The Song class - he will help you get to the most natural place in your performing - we used to laughingly call it NOT Acting The Song - because he helps you break through all the posturing and indicating and get to the truth behind the lyrics - a truly wonderful teacher.
joan lader only teaches stars and people w/ established careers. you may, however, study with one of her students. she has a mysterious method that those who study with her are not supposed to talk about. she has a very high profile but i honestly don't think she's better than most other teachers out there.
Do you know how to find out which of her students teach? Although, I actually find the whole secrecy thing with her method a little odd...

I had one lesson with Joan, and was then passed on to one of the other teachers in her group (as someone said, Joan is always overbooked), Candace Goetz. I would highly recommend her or any one of Joan's other teacher/students. After performing in the same show for a few years, I really needed to get back on track and fix some bad habits, and after about a year with Candace, I've seen tremendous change and improvement. I'm not good at articulating vocal pedagogy, but they seem to have a way of really diagnosing things that may be going wrong, and rebuilding with a healthy and correct technique...and I've never heard that it's a secret! : )
I believe Marianne Challis is also one of Joan's teachers...
Hope that helps!
You can get in with Joan if you study with one of her "protegees" and it's a real emergency.
I study with one of the protegees along with someone else, and I've never heard of keeping any secrets. The work deals heavily with physical alignment and muscular relaxation, and placement of the larynx and soft palate. I think any voice teacher who knows their stuff would work on the same. The bonus is that Joan works with a top speech pathologist, and passes on that knowledge.
My voice teacher is Roger Love. He's univerally known as the best vocal coach in Los Angeles!
CV:)
So, are all of these teachers hard to get in with? I mean will they only take you if they think you're good or at least have potential? Also, along the same lines, if you do get in with a highly respected teacher should you take that as an indication that they think you're worth putting time into?
Thanks again. In case none of you could tell I'm new to all of this :)
I had a lessonw with Adrienne. She was amazing. The first one with her will be a trial lesson.
I know this is an older message but just in case anyone stumbles upon this chat and is still looking -- Vicki Shaghoian ( vickishaghoian.com ) is someone you definitely want to look into.
I've been studying with her for the last year and she's helped guide me to my authentic voice. I had 10 years of opera training but wanted to act and sing musical rep. She reinforces that you can't sing if you're not truthfully invested in what you're saying so it turns into an acting/singing lesson. My technique has never been better, I'm singing with my real voice which connects me emotionally to everything that I'm singing, and I'm finally getting the callbacks I want.
She taught the MFA actors at Yale for 14 years and coaches many Bway stars like Bette Midler, Bryce Pinkham, and Bryan Terrell Clark. I thank my lucky stars that I found her and I can't believe more people haven't heard of her.

I sing in a local choral society and have been looking to improve my breath control for the music of Handel and Mozart.
James Snyder has been very effective in getting me to reach my goals and my sessions with him have been a pleasure.
Unfortunately he's in Pasadena right now.
I have had a lesson with Joan Lader and her technique is really wonderful. Steve Potfora is a Vocal Coach (who works on audition material) with students in over one hundred Broadway Shows who is great, accessible and in Manhattan. His info is on Facebook.
I have recently started taking lessons with Anne Runolfsson up in Westchester. She is such a lovely person, and I felt immediately comfortable with her. She's also a wonderful singer.

Would someone be able to give a general estimate of the cost of voice lessons in NYC?
I took lessons on Long Island many (many!) years ago and have been thinking about starting up again.
I was hoping to find reasonably priced lessons and also a teacher that can teach more of a "pop" or RnB style. Thanks so much for any help/ guidance!

I had really good luck with Michael Jacobs as a voice teacher and as a vocal coach. He’s really good with anxiety stuff, too, if you’ve got stage fright like me. He’s MichaelJacobsVocalStudio.com. Neil Semer was also really good for technique, but he’s away a lot. He’s Neilsemer.com.
