I live in Idaho.... in other words... NO THEATRE EVER!!! I think this year we are getting Mamma Mia and 42nd Street.... that's about it... the only other close place is in SLC, Utah. Choices aren't too bad there. As of now I am driving 12 hours next month to see *WICKED* in San Francisco!!!
Anyway... I agree that I prob. don't wanna see shows that I could eventually catch on tour...
thanx for your opinions... another Q real quick... which shows are most "family friendly" right now? I am prob. meeting some family/friends back there (w/kids) for a show or two... and I am guessing that means no RENT or Chicago w/them... which ones are likable to kids but also appealing to a more mature audience? Would you say Spamalot would be okay for younger people? What about Spelling Bee? Dirty Rotten Scoundrels?(obviously The Lion King and Beauty and the Beast are for kids... but I would rather not see them in NY if I could get them later somewhere on tour...)
thanx!

Spamalot has some cursing in the show, and Spelling Bee has the "erection song". I would automatically not take kids to see DRS, not exactly a kid friendly show at all.
Spelling Bee reccommends 10 and over, while Spamalot would say their show "may be inappropriate for children 8 and under"... so I guess it would depend on the age of the children. Maybe if Tarzan is out by the time you go see Broadway shows, that would be a great show for both... [pending on the cast]

Spelling Bee
Phantom
Sweet Charity (If it is still up)
I agree, DRS is not for kids. A bit raunchy. Spelling bee I think would be good. I can only think of one part of the show that might not be for kids under 13 which involves the character Chip.

Don't be misled by the puppets, AVENUE Q is definitely not for kids or very old conservative types!
Besides the obvious, B&B, LK, ALL SHOOK UP is a crowd pleaser. You won't be disappointed. (not about Elvis, but has his music sung very passionately and enthusiastically by a great cast, wrapped around multiple generations of couples falling in love.)
I've seen it seven times and haven't seen an unhappy audience at any of the performances. Added bonus: the cast is very receptive at the stage door.

The shows I wouldn't bother with are:
Fiddler on the Roof
Phantom (see the tour though, if you get chance, there are just better things to see first)
Lennon (if it's even still open by March)
Mamma Mia (see the tour though, if you get chance, there are just better things to see first)
In case people think I am a bad person because I am consistently talking about how life-changing Lennon was, I should add that I posted these shows as shows to avoid simply because I think everything else on Broadway is fantastic and thoroughly enjoyable. I've seen virtually every show on Broadway now, and think that all of them (with the exception of those listed above) are worthy of your money. They are all fun.

Unlike some people here who find it necessary to get negative even when asked for positive recommendations I won't knock any show, but I will suggest that you don't miss "Lennon" while in NYC. Contrary to what some people insist on repeating in every thread on this board, this is an awesome cast performing John Lennon's music and telling his story which is, as it was back then, a very positive and appropriate message for our times. It really shouldn't be missed.
I also recommend "The Producers," "Glengarry Glen Ross," and "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" in no particular order.
