I'm coming to NY in April for about a week with my sister. We wanna see a show (d'uh) and i was looking at Hairspray (which I REALLY wanna see), Avenue Q (I wanna see that too), and the off-broadway performace of The Awesome 80's Prom. Any other suggestions? What show would you recommend?

I haven't seen Avenue Q or 80s Prom, but Hairspray is pretty good. Also, they've got American Idol finalist Diana Digarmo doing the role of Penny Pingleton, so that should be a treat if you want to see it.

Avenue Q all the way! Additionally, if you like sushi, while attending Q, you can dine at Raku Japanese. You can even get a free drink if you print out a coupon.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and/or Spelling Bee...
Oooh! And I Love You Because...=wunderbar
What about SWEENEY TODD? One of the few shows of recent seasons that has gotten raves from critics and audiences. It is also one of the very best shows of the last half of the 20t century. For a serius musical theatre fan it is a must.
Cast albums are NOT "soundtracks."
Live theatre does not use a "soundtrack." If it did, it wouldn't be live theatre!
I host a weekly one-hour radio program featuring cast album selections as well as songs by cabaret, jazz and theatre artists. The program, FRONT ROW CENTRE is heard Sundays 9 to 10 am and also Saturdays from 8 to 9 am (eastern times) on www.proudfm.com

Sweeney is great.
I saw my first Broadway play back in November and it was RENT. Cheap tickets, great show! I saw it before I even saw the movie (the play is better by the way)
I know someone who saw Awesome 80s and didn't like it, but then everyone has his or her own opinion. Hmmm...go see Hairspray def, I saw it, it's good, fun theater and I loved all the dance breaks. If you haven't seen DRS, go see that.

I agree with gav. Go see "Piazza".
Avenue Q
Forbidden Broadway
Hairspray
Spelling Bee
Spamalot
Jersey Boys
Rabbit Hole (Not for everyone, but I loved it)
I Love You Because is cute.
The Color Purple
Abagail's party if you are over 21.
I also adored Sweeney.
Doubt
Avoid the awesome 80's prom. It was dreadful.

Argh I was just in NYC on a Monday nite and saw FB: SVU... I TOTALLY forgot about "I Love You Because" **smacks self in the head**
God I hope it's still open in the summer.
Sorry for the threadjack....
How about the Wedding Singer? If you like Hairspray, I think the Wedding Singer would be the most similar.

I've seen Rent (the play is better than the movie, mind you the movie is still pretty good)
I would LOVE to see Hairspray.

Sweeney Todd
The Light in the Piazza
Rabbit Hole
Doubt
I liked Doubt and I saw the new cast the day of that horrible snow storm. It was worth hiking up snow mountains.
