<< Does anybody relate to anything that was created before 1996? >>
I dont know how many others are with me in this, but
I am sure there are characters from pre-1996 shows that I would relate to, but given my age, aside from recent broadway shows, my only other musical exposure is the classic movies. And as much as I love Maria Von Trapp and Marian the librarian, I dont particularly relate to them. Plus, March was my first trip to NYC so I havent gotten to see very much.
Its not a matter of people being caught up in trends (which, in some cases it probably is) but perhaps because we havent been around or able to see as much. I would LOVE to see some of the shows from the years between the 60s musicals and the current productions!
Thats just my explanation for all the recent characters.

Namo, you light up my life.
"The stage is where I live and come alive and act out all the things that go on in my life. It's not just what I do for a living, it's my shrink and my love affair. No one in my life has ever or ever will kiss me on the mouth like this lover called my relationship with my performance."

I think I relate to Mark from Rent. I dont know what it was but the first time that I heard the sundtrack I was like that is me just cause I feel that I sit back and just watch everything that happens around me.
or
Tracy from hairspray. cause I just dont fit in with a lot of people

If they were fat they wouldn't be able to fit INBETWEEN people.

Now you lyin, lyin, never been so thin;
you lie, you lie, cuz you're knockin up that piece who thinks she's better than everybody--she ain't better than anybody! she ain't nothin' but COMMON.

But I do get shat upon sometimes... :)
And I am constantly changing.
So you'd better see me.
Cuz we got one night only.
And I am telling you I'm not going.
And I am your dreamgirl.
Well...

Thanks for reminding me, Judy!
I have, tragically, not seen Jekyll & Hyde but judging from "Someone Like You" I can identify with Lucy, as well. She seems to have an intensity about her.

Mark in RENT. That's what sucked me into the show, how much alike we are. His my and mine are one and the same. I stand on the sidelines all the time, things happen to other people, not me. I am the witness and I watch and document. The show is personal to me in that way, even though I don't have AIDS and I'm not starving.

interesting topic. two most accurate:
let's go with george seurat (hoping i spelled that one right, we'd hate for spelling junkies to jump on me) from Sunday in the Park- i'm always turning back to late from my "creative endevors" if you will, to notice what's happening out the the window. we're both a tad bit obsessive, and i say that knowing it's an overused and less than flattering term.
second, fosssssssca from "passion." let's face it, she rules. the lyrics to "loving you" are almost embarressing in their proximity of the truth. and i'm sick all the time (missed 36 days of school this year?) and i stalk people. oy i should never post this late...
various others:
-joe pitt in "angels in america"
-the nurse in "hello, again"
-hamlet in "hamlet"
-Stine, "city of angels"

I've always related strongly to Don Quixote and the man who invented him, Cervantes, in Man of La Mancha...how wonderful it must be to be able to always see the good in every situation (its tough, but I strive to do so)...to quote The Don "Call nothing thine own except thy soul. Love not what thou art, but only what thou may become. Look always forward. In last year's nest there are no birds this year. Do not persue pleasure, for thou may have the misfortune to overtake it. Be just to all men, be courteous to all women. Live in the vision of that one for whom all great deeds are done: she that is called Dulcinea."
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!"
Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

Peter in BARE
The things in that character and the struggles/joys he goes through relate to my life more and more everday. It's uncanny.
