Damn it. I'm watching Adam's Chatterbox; he's talking about AIDA now.... about how long it had been running at the time, the capacity.... how much people loved it and the Tony noms it didn't get. And he's pissed. *cries*

I saw the show with Saycon, Will Chase and Mandy Gonzalez... what a dynamic trio!

And if she'll say, "My darling, I'm yours!" I'll throw away my striped tie and my best pressed tweed, all I really need is the girl...

forever tango stayed open because it didn't cost much at all to put on. Emcee, what are these adam chatterbox tapes?

Once they resort to stunt casting it tarnishes the intergrity of the production for the rest of the run and for that it needed to close.

Just like others do. Rent, for example, as amazing a show as it is, showed that it needs to close the minute Joey Fatone played his first performance.

And then when Drew Lachey signed on it was just adding insult to injury.

"One no longer loves one's insight enough once one communicates it."

The opposite of creation isn't war, it's stagnation.

Whoever did the press for Forever Tango did a terrible job or was not given enough to work with. I barely knew the show existed, don't know what it was about, have no idea who was in it and never saw them advertised anywhere. I didn't realize it was out for so long either, limping along at the box office. I remember being surprised to hear that it was closing because I thought it had closed already.

Rent . . . I can't be impartial. I'll just say I still love the show and continue to support it and its actors.

For those who saw her, how was Schele Williams as Aida? Her voice is amazing.

I have a friend who saw it with Michelle Williams and said she was really good...however she didn't get to see the unbelievable Heather Headley (or wait outside the theater for 27 hours to get student tickets to Heather's last show...

)I know seeing Heather definitely influenced my opinion of later Aida's...

Agreed Priest. I don't think we can 'blame' the stunt casting for the closure of Aida. They resorted to stunt casting due to the poor numbers coming in its last summer.

At the end of the day, Aida came to its 'natural' end. It didn't have the same appeal to theatre-goers such The Lion King and Beauty and The Beast. Nothing more, nothing less....

As others have said, I think the biggest problem was in casting Aida. It's a challenging part vocally and also needs a good actress, or at least one with a great deal of stage presence. Heather Headley was an unknown but got so much attention and acclaim when the show opened that she became a draw while she was there. After she left, the choice was between other unknowns who wouldn't be able to get that kind of attention no matter how good they were, and bigger names, a lot of whom apparently either couldn't sing or couldn't act well enough - or both. This was not a show like Lion King in which the show itself was the star.

While I'm sorry it's gone, I'm also glad Disney didn't let it limp along in a tattered condition indefinitely the way some shows seem to be doing. They got a strong closing cast and ended it well.
