Hi
I saw the musical 13 a few nights ago and I dont like it. I think it stupid and silly (but not the good kind like LEGALLY BLONDE!). The music sounds like a cross between High School Musical and the Jonas Brothers. The kids are okay but too overmatched for Broadway. The book is annoying and lame.
I didnt like it
But there was a school group of like 13 year olds at my performance and they liked it. They were screaming and cheering and laughing. I dont see what so good about this show. Why it on Broadway

Posted: 9/23/08 at 2:57pmDarling, every show that opens on Broadway gains a rabid cult no matter how big a piece of crap it is. I haven't seen 13, so I'll suspend my judgment but when you have a board that has a "CARRIE could totally work!" faction and used to have a "BROOKLYN is the best musical ever!" contingent, there's somethin' goin' on.

Why do people like passing strange?
I saw it and the book was very boring, the story was lame, the music was mediocre at best.
13 is original, braver then any HSM theme, the music is catchy and performances are wonderful. If you don't like it, don't post about it, just like I didn't bash passing strange until the ticket sales agreed with my opinion.
This community is filled with people who feel that there opinions are important, the demo are having a great time at the show, go complain about something else.

but PS is not on Broadway.
"13" is.
You're changing the subject.... not answering my question.
How is it original? There lots of shows just like "13" -- the premise has been recycled since like the 1950's

"If you don't like it, don't post about it, just like I didn't bash passing strange until the ticket sales agreed with my opinion."
So does that mean if 13 closes before recouping, you'll allow the haters to hate until their hearts are content, because it means that their opinions, according to your logic, have been validated?
(A show closing =/= the show is bad. A show closing = revenue insufficient to make keeping the show open a financially viable option [the majority of the time, at least] =/= the show is bad. Saying that a show is automatically bad because it flopped is like saying a show is automatically good because it's popular.)

Some people think it's a good show.
It's original because it's so true to the life of common teens.
Why do some people feel the need to post stupid questions?

Posted: 9/23/08 at 3:35pmI haven't seen it yet, but based on "Parade" and "The Last Five Years" I find it hard to believe it's completely without merit, at least in the score. I'll go see it expecting good things based on the composer's past work.

People like 13 for the same reasons people like Passing Strange, Sweeney Todd, A Chorus Line, Brooklyn, Rent, Wicked, [insert name of Broadway show in here]...
Everyone has different tastes. I haven't seen 13, so I can't judge it, but I can say I've heard generally negative things about it. Does that mean people can't like it? No. What happened to people posting constructive negative reviews?

Posted: 9/23/08 at 4:32pmI really liked 13, and I have many friends that loved it also that aren't stupid, shrieking tweens. Sure, its not totally original, nor is it without its bad moments (PLEASE let them cut the act 1 finally.) However, I would NOT compare it to High School Musical (Which I think is the downfall of society.) It is not some stupid, watered down, disney depiction of teenage life. I really liked the book, it was really funny. And the cast is great. The score is not Jason Robert Brown's absolute best, but it still has some wonderful songs.

This has nothing to do with anything, but:
In my opinion, the badness of a show directly relates to the age range of those who happen to like it.
So if a show is PIRATE QUEEN-level bad, those people who like it will average out to be younger, will tend to be those who (although not all young people are like this) just can't take it when someone else has an opinion different than theirs. It's the same with the Inheritance Cycle of fantasy books: there are a lot of people who don't like the books, who have received death threats from young readers who think the books are the greatest things ever.
I'm being totally serious. And I could be totally wrong.

This is honestly such a stupid question... everyone will have a different reason for liking any show. Just because YOU didn't like 13 doesn't mean everyone shouldn't like it.
You obviously like Passing Strange, while I didn't like it. Why do people like Passing Strange? Guaranteed the answer to that will be the same as the answer to your original question. It's a matter of opinion. Get a clue.

Posted: 9/23/08 at 5:58pmWhy do people like any show? They like it because they like it. If everyone would like the same thing and it would be a really boring place. Not to mention we would only have one show to go to...lol.

"How long till 13 closes? I wish Xanadu would stay open till October 12th"
What do those two things even have to do with each other? lol

Posted: 9/23/08 at 7:44pmWay to be really negative, some people like the show, the music is very good and some of it is funny and it's just a fun show, those are all opinions.

Well, I was successful.
I asked a stupid question to see how many of you would actually respond with some type of content. Maybe give some examples. Help someone who didn't like the show?
I was asking a valid question.
To some, maybe the answer IS "Just because" ... but the 13 Schillers failed to sway me otherwise.
Too bad.

In your original post you asked "Why do people like 13?" and "Why is it on Broadway?" You posed two questions in a very negative way, so you got very negative responses. The proper way to ask this question would be, "What did you like about 13?" It lets people know that you didn't enjoy it but it also doesn't make you come off as a total douche. Now to answer the only two questions you actually asked...
1. People like 13 for various reasons. Pick your favorite. Regardless of why they liked it, you still don't. Are their reasons for liking it suddenly going to make you like it? No. So it doesn't matter.
2. A large group of producers saw something potentially marketable in the material and fronted the money to bring it to Broadway. Whether their decision was successful is still up in the air.
