I never got yelled at waiting at the CHICAGO rush.

People used to line up at SPAMALOT at 5 am for SRO. Back when the cast was star studded.

Maybe the cops just didn't like you.

If memory serves the whole a cop gets mad at the buliding owners for it being crowded has to do with blocking foot traffic. For example, The Nederlander is right in the middle of the street and if a lot of people are in fornt of it then foot traffic is blocked. Same for the Ambasador theatre. But, for Spamalot they lined up in Shubert Alley so it didn't block foot traffic.

Then how would you explain the other dozen theaters that offer rush? There are as many lotteries as there are for student rush and being policies instituted by the production, the police never get involved. This thread is insaaaaane, partially due to the fact that two of the most beloved posters are running amok.

But, if you were to camp out for chicago tickets then you will get yelled at by a cop.

Bullsh!t. Before I worked for Chicago, I used to rush the show all the time -- both at the Shubert and at the Ambassador. I was never bothered by anyone.... and for once, I know that's NOT as a result of my knowing everyone.

Ditto for Rent. I used to camp out at Rent all the time back in the day. Never had an issue.

I've met people who waited on line (well...started the line) for Jersey Boys rush at 4 in the morning!!! And the August Wilson Theatre is in the middle of the block...

You obviously had a bad experience (I didn't know cops could kick people out of rush lines...)

If no one is allowed to camp out anymore to get tickets, then I have no idea how all those kids got rush tickets for The Wedding Singer's final performance.

They were out there for HOURS and as far as I know, no one said anything to them.

Quick history of the Rent lotto. Back when they opened they had the line that went around 41st and 7th and went back towards sixth ave. Over the years the cops gave the theatre citations for blcoking a public place and not letting foot traffic get through. In order for the fines to stop comming they decided to create the lotto format.

NYC has VERY strict and strange laws when it comes ot camping outside a public place. 10 or so people leaning against the wall of the theatre waiting to get rush tickets isn't so bad. However, if it snakes around the corner and heads up north a little bit like rent did then that's a problem. But, if a show like wicked did rush then you can bet your ass that the theatre would be really friendly with the local branch of the NYPD.

On a seprate note, I was at the wedding singer day before its last preformance. I got out of the theatre and saw the kids all set to camp out. As i was looking at them a guy from the box office told them that it's illeagle to camp out in the middle off the street. Espically on new years when he cops are trying to block off the area and they would be in the way. One teenage girl very stubbornly said that she wasn't moving at all despite the fact that guy told them that there was no reason for all of them to camp out. That they could easilly come back the next morning and there would be tickets there for them at cheap prices.

Mistress, youre right. We were out there all night for the last wedding singer show, from 12 the night before, and the cops were actually coming by every once in a while checking on us, making sure everyone was ok and stuff, and the house staff never said anything about us camping out.

and this past saturday i rushed Spring Awakening and the line was half way up the block and no one said anything.
