I think this is a case of a combination of an actor who tends to sing with quite a bit of straight-tone making a further conscious decision about the sound of her character's voice. That video is really fun, but, in addition to the Fredericka parentage issue, it would require substantial changes to lyrics (including most of "You Must Meet My Wife") that the Sondheim estate would never approve. I liked Girl Interrupted more than Benjamin Button — it has a commercial producer who commissioned it apparently still attached (Barbara Broccoli) so my sense is that it would only transfer without the Public (like Liberation’s commercial transfer from Roundabout) since they’re clearly aiming for a Button transfer. J2 Spotlight Musical Theater Company did this at Theater Row with Janine LaManna a few years ago — a fine production, but, except for "The Grass Is Always Greener," which won Marilyn Cooper the Tony for maybe seven minutes of stage time, the material does not hold up. There are other Kander & Ebb scores worth doing at Encores! (The Rink, Flora the Red Menace, Steel Pier) before they get to Woman of the Year, if the point is to illuminate great music.

The biggest ramifications here are that A) Andrew Durand in leading means Best Actor in a Musical now has nine eligible performances and goes to five slots (which are now pretty close to locks — Henry, Tutty, Uranowitz, Christopher, Evans) and that B) Best Score now has five eligible musicals (plus play scores) which means the nominators can't honor any play's underscoring without dishonoring, so to speak, Beaches or QOV's full score.

I’m pretty sure it was two separate categories, much like the Drama Desk continues to do (often with different nominees and winners in each). It’s great in a year like 1983 where ALW won for Cats and Howard Ashman won for lyrics. But there was only a single Tony nomination in 1971 for a new musical that wasn’t one of those three shows (an acting award for Two by Two), so if you look at the eligibility list, those nominations are not surprising. Glenda Jackson DID do King Lear at the Old Vic directed by Deborah Warner in 2016, but the Broadway production was completely unrelated (and directed by Sam Gold). I'd imagine Daniel Radcliffe will be extremely likely to get a nod too.For Best Actor, Micah Stock will absolutely be eligible and I'd imagine will have a better chance than Will Harrison (or Alex Winter, who probably doesn't have a shot). James Corden would also be eligible given Alfred Molina's nomination in this category for the same role — I think he's the only nomination that Art can hope for at this point.
