I feel like it worked bc one thing that's never made sense about the musical is how damned earnest all the ALW power ballads seem as a response to a movie that is deliberately cruel and ironic. I was fortunate to see George Hearn numerous times in the Broadway production with each of the different Normas - who was amazing in his own right for sure... but I agree with this 100%.  What made this production so dramatic for me was that I had emotional connections that I had never had before - especially with Norma

I prefer watching a character only instead of the personal life of the actress. This moment should be only about the storyline of the show. Also, everything that comes after it feels like anti-climax to me. The build up in the song was written for a reason.

I guess it comes down
