Have to be losing a lot of money. I have to say that I expected this. Unlike The Wiz and Mamma Mia, this is not an iconic feel-good musical; Beetlejuice, even at its most successful, was more of a cult show. Live and learn.
Is anyone surprised that Chess did only 92% of capacity last week. I know the gross was great, but I would have expected it to be closer to 97 - 98%. Makes me start to wonder if this is going to end up like the shows that start off really strong, but peter out after 6 months of so, e.g., Follies revival, Finding Neverland, Company revival.
I have to admit that I thought KC might have used her injuries as an excuse not to return to QOV. Must be really depressing for her. At least SRS seems to be getting very good feedback for a show for which she was basically a hired hand.
The Outsiders average ticket price ($157) is back to being very solid, after their rough patch. I am thinking that this is still going to be around this time next year, which I think is great.
Disappointed that Two Strangers is not doing well.
Unless Lost Boys is great, is it possible that the Tony's will ship Best Musical next year and change the rules so there can be more revival nominees, assuming Rocky Horror gets good reviews.
Finally, I honestly expected Oedipus to become a sellout, given the leads, the limited engagement, and the short run."
While I agree with you about Beetlejuice, I find there is a bit of handwringing about the others. To go point-by-point:
1) In this state of affairs, 92% capacity is pretty damn good. Even then, it’s not really that number that matters so much as the gross and the average ticket price. Just last week, they broke the Imperial Theatre box office record for the second time. Even if the show has a nut of $1M per week (which seems a bit of a high estimate), they are smashing expectations. Not bad for a musical that flopped hard 40 years ago.
2) I don’t doubt that this might have something to do with it, but wasn’t the driving factor. Neck injuries are no joke (currently in the midst of one myself), and so the producers maybe looked at how dismal the future looked even after announcing closing and, with their leading lady possibly needing to tap out for select performances, cut their losses even further.
3) TWO STRANGERS is actually doing fine for right now, though precarious. Again, even if the theatre isn’t fully packed, they are paying a high enough price for tickets. Their nut, as I previously mentioned in last weeks thread referencing Forbes, is $480,577 per week, making it the cheapest run new musical post-COVID.
4) Re: The Tonys - not likely. Please see page 10 of the current rules
5) OEDIPUS has been a sellout hit. Lesley Manville’s unscheduled absences last Friday-Sunday may have just made a small impact.
