If you asked six months ago I would have said "this is going to Jefferson Mays" but after seeing and reading reviews for NPH he WILL be standing onstage that night to accept the award.

What's the most you'll spend ... May 2
2014, 11:21:38 PM
I know a couple who who used AIRBNB.COM and found a private room in luxury apartment for $125.00 per night on the UWS (instead of a $350+ hotel room). They stayed 5 days and were able to afford to see a show every night because of the money they saved on accommodations.-

Kinky Boots break... what is an May 2

Univision is owned by Comcast (NBC Universal) and it is their most profitable division. In every market in the country with a large Hispanic population it ranks #1 in the most desired demographics. The folks are Univision aren't even blinking an eye about spending that much for the upfronts (not to mention Univision will fly Station Owners, Station Managers and Programmers to New York for a week of wining, dining, entertainment and luxury accomodations).

Tony Nominations- what does it mean as far as closing notices? Apr 30
2014, 10:48:15 AM
BRIDGES will probably post a closing notice this week and be gone by mid-May. I think the producers were counting on a Best Musical nomination (and win) but that won't happen. Tony Awards for acting alone don't boost a show's grosses. The only categories and wins that will boost a show grosses are Best Play and Best Musical.

Theater Refurbishments Apr 28
2014, 06:12:15 PM
"Remember when the Marquis opened and was decorated in a shade of dusky rose, like a group of little old ladies from the the nearest convalescent home had come up with the color palette?" When the hotel opened Dusty Rose was the main color scheme for the hotel. Even the napkins and tablecloths in the restaurants and banquet rooms were Dusty Rose as well as the bedspreads in the guest rooms. I guess when they began decorating the theater they extended that color scheme. <

Breaking News: Final 2014 Tony Awards Eligibility from LADY DAY to CABARET! Apr 26
2014, 01:21:59 AM
The administration usually defers to producers requests for which categories performers are placed in but not always. They will sometimes deny a request for a bump from featured to lead and they will sometimes bump an actor from featured to lead even though the producers preferred that performer in the featured category (Kristine Nielsen comes to mind).

Broadway Grosses: Week Ending 4/6/14 Apr 7
2014, 04:26:41 PM
If you think last week was bad wait until you see next week. Passover begins next Monday and that is historically one of the slowest weeks of the year on Broadway.

Hedwig strong, Bridges falters - Variety Apr 3
2014, 11:53:57 AM
"What are "royalty waivers"?" There is a clause in the contracts of most royalty participants (composers, writers, directors, choreographers, designers, etc.) that allows producers to reduce or waive royalties if a show fails to meet its weekly nut. http://atpamnmam.tripod.com/Royalty_Pools.PDF

Hedwig strong, Bridges falters - Variety Apr 1
2014, 04:11:42 PM
I am going to assume that BRIDGES is on royalty waivers and perhaps the Shubert's are giving them reduced rent in order to keep the show running but even then those grosses are low for a Broadway musical. Lead producer Jeffrey Richards is not known for keeping a show running with such huge losses.

If/then Reviews Apr 1

This will probably run through the summer on the strength of Menzel's fan base (Wicked and Frozen fans) and then die a quiet death during the annual September slump.

Joining equity. Mar 29
2014, 06:10:43 PM
If memory serves, when Joan Jett played Columbia in THE ROCKY HORROR SHOW at the Circle in the Square she never joined Equity and she didn't record the cast album because she had a contract with a different record company that wanted too much money to release her from her contract to record the album (similar to when Ethel Merman had a contract with Decca but RCA? recorded the OBC album with Dinah Shore singing Ethel's part because Decca wouldn't let her out of her contract).

What is the best musical on Broadway right now? Mar 29
2014, 02:35:53 PM
It is a subjective question. Are you looking for laugh-out loud musical comedies, musical drama, London imports, adaptations of animated films, jukebox musicals, revivals of classic musicals or something else?

Weekly running costs for broadway shows Mar 29
2014, 03:01:16 AM
The general rule for a musical is 50% of the potential weekly gross but contracts of royalty participants usually contain a clause that allows for reduced or waived royalties if a show doesn't reach its weekly nut and theater owners will sometimes offer reduced rent to keep a show running (unless they have another show waiting to come into the house).

NY steakhouse recommendations, anyone? Mar 27

I like SMITH & WOLLENSKY: 49th Street & Third Avenue. Food is excellent but horrible acoustics. I think it may be the noisiest restaurant in NYC.
