Audra McDonald-led GYPSY for 2024-2025 Season! Sep 21

Kad said: "Gypsy has never been a smash hit show. Of the 5 productions thus far, none of them have cracked 2 years. LuPone and Lansbury didn’t even last a year, Peters made it just over a year, Daly was a year and a half, and the original production was a couple months shy of 2."
The Great Recession happened before Patti could make it to a year, we have to remember that.

It seems like Riedel and Laurents ruined the 2003 revival of Gypsy, the former was particularly cruel.

ANYONE who actually sat in the theatre watching it live would tell you that Imelda was jawdroppingly brilliant. I’ve never seen a UK audience react like that- as well documented , standing ovations are earnt In the UK not obligatory like in NYC. And what an ovation she got at every performance.
I agree she was brilliant. but I have never seen a perf

I watched the Imelda Staunton version- I feel like she got misdirected because she overdoes it a lot. She's a great actress though.

Sutton still comes across as too young persona-wise but you know, the real Rose was younger than she is now when she got her kids into all this so I feel like the role could be played by younger actresses generally. We see young stage moms on shows like Toddler and Tiaras and in real life. The role has been played by older actors/character types for the most part which I think is a great thing but there should be more variety in casting.

I'm not as frequent of a user on here so just to double-check, this is referencing Shuffle Along right?

I worry that this is a case of the “suttons” (aka an established musical theatre star who keeps taking on roles she’s not “right for” to push herself and because she wants to play them). Regardless, I doubt Audra would do it if she wasn’t sure she’d be brilliant, so I’m keeping an open mind!"

Boy, do I feel stupid, lol. But I hope that means Chenoweth can clear the field for 2026.

They are very much in support of Rose. And nobody of legitimate fame should want to be below the title on something being billed as AUDRA GYPSY. And throwing money at most actors will not solve that problem, in-demand actors turn down a lot of stuff.

I'm so excited to hear the full score of Queen of Versailles but I'm curious- what shows did Chenoweth turn down to do it?

It definitely has to do with the trend of popular music favoring higher and higher singing for both genders and composers don't write soprano roles anymore.
