re: Natasha Richardson injured in skiing accident  Mar 17 2009, 04:18:30 AM
It's deep in the middle of the night by New York time, but still before my usual bedtime. I know that in Canada a man is probably right now sitting by the bedside of his loved one, hoping for the best and fearing the worst. My thoughts are with you, Liam.

We look up to celebrities and stars, follow their careers, they become our inspiration, and heros. But then there are those people whose names and faces we don't automatically recognize, those who are daily working to save people's li

God, this is not good news.

"suffered a brain injury and is in critical condition"

If this is so this could be a life or death struggle.

Accidental double-click. (Double post.) Too many cafe mochas.

""Because film is about making money."
And Broadway isn't? There'sa reason why it's called show BUSINESS. Don't oversimplify.

Well, yeah, foster is right. In film you are dealing with much larger sums of money. The stakes are higher, the gamble hazard is higher. Why recreate a failure? Especially a financial failure. It if made money, that's a whole different game.

Filmmaking today, especially Hollywood, is so much about anticipating the market demographic. It's n

I don't "usually always" go alone, but I usually enjoy it when I do. For one thing I travel a lot and don't always have someone to go with me. I go for interest in theatre as an art, or just to "get away" by myself, not so much for a social occasion. I can leave the theatre mulling over my own impressions of a show, not having to accommodate someone else's impressions if I am not in agreement.

Going alone does at times set me up for some man coming up to me wanting to start a conversat

Ah ha! Didn't work as well on film as on stage, but I'm sure it'll be worth getting for the soundtrack and visuals alone.

"No crying wolf here, the black helicopters do exist."

In that case, Yawper , and to give a serious answer, From my viewpoint that is unusual. I live on the boarder. If you follow the coastline from Forks, Washington to Vancouver, B.C. (actually Blaine, Washington, the main entry point to the greater Vancouver area) you will find every kind of police conceivable and the area is dotted with coastal military bases.

While I do see Coast Guard escort ships and red and white

re: Forget abortion, what about Noah?  Oct 1 2008, 10:43:08 PM
What a question. If America politics depends on this kind of question, it's no wonder you're fff'd (we're fff'd).

Noah's shopping list:

two rats
two tapeworms

...do I gotta build a tank big enough for the freshwater fish? ... or should it be salt water?

... let's see, should I include all extinct species and all species not yet developed? How about the pre-homo sapiens, the hominids?

And how do I feed all the carnivorous animals, should I

MediaCurves.com reports a shift towards Obama among Democrats, Republicans and Independents who viewed Defenders of Wildlife's TV ad on Palin's wolf hunting policy. The Defenders of Wildlife Action Fund is still raising money to air the ad in key battleground states. The ad has been aired in Ohio, Florida, Northern Virginia and Michigan. They are hoping they can raise funds to play the ad in Colorado and keep it on air in all of these states between now and the upcoming vice presidential debate.

re: The Making of Miss Saigon  Sep 3 2008, 06:14:54 PM
The thing is, Lea Salonga passes to the most audience as Vietnamese since she is Filipino/Asian.

This may be true for a western audience, but remember the uproar about having Chinese stars in Memoirs of a Geisha?

if you're someone who is marginalized in society on a regular basis then you're not going to understand our frustration...

This is a complex issue and I don't think there is a definite answer. It has to do with the content of the show, the sensitivity (or lack thereof) of the portrayal, the period in question and a lot of other things. Should Yul Brynner (Russian) have never played the king of Siam? Or Laurence Olivier never play Othello?

I was always curious about A

re: Broadway Gitanas  Sep 1 2008, 08:46:22 PM
Carmen Amaya was a star on Broadway in the 1940's and 50's. She had a long run in Knickerbacker Holiday, but she was in several other shows on Broadway and at the Beachcomber. (A night club on or near Broadway that was later the Hawaii Kai or something). Ibdb does not give the full listing her credits.

re: Broadway stars who did NOT go to College...  Aug 31 2008, 01:50:59 AM
KMC, (or KJisgroovy) Yes, I agree with your statement. To get that kind of position (high-paid professorship) requires a dedication to your work and a certain mindset from the get-go. I have, however, met people who have accomplished that by their early 30's. That approach to the art and craft can potentially provide security (once you get the tenure) that the commercial theatre world seldom provides.

It may be hard (read "a lot of hard work") to get such a position, but you can almost

SporkGoddess, maybe it does. I think it also depends on who they are, their educational background and professional background, and on the institution and how much they can afford to pay.

Footyball coaches at some Universities get paid millions. Maybe I should go into football instead. (Women's tackle football.)

re: Broadway stars who did NOT go to College...  Aug 30 2008, 04:23:35 AM
Wanna Be... I know professors who are making upwards of $125K in theatre and in film, that was where I got that figure. I will not mention where or who, because it is really not my business to report to you.

re: Who would be interested in 'To Kill a Mockingbird' as a Broadway drama?  Aug 30 2008, 03:47:33 AM
I'm not against new productions of old plays with new directorial interpretations, actor interpretations (I love Shakespeare) ... but Borstal made a good point. Today's theatre industry appears to fall back on the tried and proven and is less interested in taking risks with something new.

There is a lot of subject matter today that could potentially have as great an impact as TKAM if only a playwright were confident enough that a producer would back it. Unfortunately in today's worl

On Creepiness:

I wouldn't know whether it was creepy or uncreepy until I met you. Your post doesn't sound offensive. But a little more of who you are, where you are coming from (geographically) what you would like to see, etc. wouldn't hurt. This is coming from a single 31 yr old woman who often travels alone, though I've never made such arrangements on the internet. I like to meet people in person and field the situation from there.

For me, something more like "where are good

re: Jobs on Broadway  Aug 27 2008, 02:37:59 PM
God point jordangirl . That is why out on the west coast, in the film world, some of the better schools set you up with an internship during your final year. If it goes well, this can slide into a job upon graduation. I can think of a number of screenwriters, animators, film crew, who did it this way.
