Universal's WICKED Film - News & Discussion Thread

Jeffrey Karasarides said: "With Grande losing the Globe (which she would've easily won like 10 years ago) and Emilia Pérez looking like a serious threat to win Best Picture, I have a hard time seeing Saldana loseat this point."

Regardless of if she loses every award going forward (and she might), she is absolutely in the Top 2 for the Oscar. Her and Saldana are the only actresses to hit every precursor award. I think that qualifies her as "po

I've gotta give major props to Cynthia and Ariana for this. The best case scenario for this film before it's release was that it was liked by fans and was financially successful. Given how pretty much every Broadway adaptation for the last decade or more has lost money, this would have been a fantastic result. And Oscar attention for the roles of Elphaba and Galinda? Forget about it.

But boy did this movie defy all odds. Ariana went from a highly suspect casting choice, t

MAYBE HAPPY ENDING Reviews

Saw this over the weekend and really loved it. Such beauty in it's simplicity, while also having wonderful tech elements. Really impressed how it's turned it's fate around financially, it really deserves it. Hoping it gets some well-deserved recognition come Tony time.

AUDRA GYPSY Reviews
 Jan 23 2025, 01:09:07 PM

Was lucky to get the opportunity to see this last Friday. What an experience! Audra is giving the performance of a lifetime and had me gasping several times. Her "Rose's Turn" was absolutely thrilling, and I will never forget the audience's immediate standing ovation when it was over. Oh, to be an audience member sitting right by the pass around. I can imagine only those with belt-loyalty being disappointed by this performance.

I understand the critiques of

Saw it last night. A few minor issues, but my thoughts can be boiled down to this:

When adapting this musical to film, “Defying Gravity” is undoubtedly the trickiest part. Done even a little bit wrong, it could look so stupid. That number is the litmus test for this entire two-part extravaganza. To “prove its worth,” if you will.

They ****ing nailed it.

Out-Of-Left-Field Dream Casting?
 Nov 21 2024, 01:11:08 PM

I've always thought Jodi Benson would make an incredible Diana in Next to Normal. Her princess persona would work in direct contrast to the heavy material in a way that could be amazing. She's recently played Dolly Levi and Mama Rose in California, so hey, it could happen!

Audra McDonald teaser video -- yikes!!!

That ten seconds of Audra singing 1) Sounds perfectly fine, and 2) is barely anything to go off of. Also, Barbara Cook left Carrie because she almost got killed by a moving staircase set piece.

OH, MARY! Reviews

The Bowen rumor never seemed likely to me, unless it was for like a very limited two-week or so run during the holidays. Bowen has become one of the big MVPs of SNL, and I cannot imagine how he would do a 8 show week while doing that, and they certainly aren't giving him time off for it.

Even though the "singing live" gimmick is a little eyeroll-worthy at this point, I am happy to see how much effort and love seems to have been put into this movie. This movie would absolutely not have worked without two dynamite vocalists in the lead roles, so thank goodness they are bringing it so hard. I don't think anyone should be shamed for doubting Ari's casting when it was first announced, given she gave the ultimate "go on girl give us nothing" performance

Bernadette Peters & Lea Salonga to Lead OLD FRIENDS On Broadway

Bernadette AND Beth Leavel in a show together? Gay theatre gasps heard around the globe, and mine was the loudest.

Rob Marshall to direct new film adaptation of GUYS & DOLLS

Jake Gyllenhaal and Anne Hathaway as Sky and Sarah.

Stay with me here, but Nathan Lane and Jennifer Coolidge as Nathan and Adelaide?? I've always been intrigued by the idea of Nathan and Adelaide being much older.

The 77th Annual Tony Award Nominations for 2024
 May 16 2024, 09:17:28 AM

He was directed to put different things for "will" and "should" in almost every category? Seems like it will be a frustrating ceremony for him if he really thinks the 95% of the winners are undeserving...

I have to say, as someone who found the show fairly entertaining (maybe unpopular opinion) with very strong performances (seems to be the consensus), the ad team is actually doing a genius job marketing this show. Even those rolling their eyes at the ads are at least noticing them. A show with this niche of a subject matter, no celebrity casting, and this middling of reviews would normally be a non-entity in terms of press. However, I feel like it's been the most

Saw this last week (Saturday March 30th) and found it pretty enjoyable. I liked the design elements, and some of the lighting was very cool. Everyone was in good vocal shape. Everyone down to the ensemble soloists was putting in the WORK for this show. After seeing a couple of leads barely scraping by in Sweeney the night before, it was refreshing to hear even the smallest of solos done flawlessly. I will echo the sentiments that Amber Iman gives a star turn, and Beth Leave

Hilty & Simard to lead DEATH BECOMES HER in Chicago spring 2024

Sieber is an obvious choice for this, and I'm excited to see it in May! No intended slight to her, but Michelle Williams seems very much like a placeholder to me, and they would go with a bigger "name" for Broadway. Obviously Scherzinger was intended for the role, but Sunset put the kibosh on that.

Hilty and Simard are perfect for these roles, beautiful actresses who can sing and are HILARIOUS. I can't imagine any bigger "names" they would

Little Shop...Who Leads? Anyone know?

Jinkx as Audrey is so exciting! I know it wouldn't line up with her schedule of going back to Chicago, but it would be an EVENT if she replaced Sutton in Sweeney.
