re: Thoughts On The Final Performance Of HAIRSPRAY
 Jan 8 2009, 12:23:10 PM
Ha, so this is a bit late since I've spent most of the past few days traveling and getting back into the swing of "normal life", but I wanted to post myself since I had such an amazing time (Warning: I might ramble).

So much of my Hairspray experience has been by chance, and Sunday's closing show was no different. My first time seeing the show was about 4 years ago when the first National Tour made it's way through NC. At that time I didn't know anything about the show (and I hate to admit that just from the marquee it wasn't something I was initially interested in) but a friend of mine had two tickets and I wasn't about to pass up a chance to see a show. In the end I was amazed and since then it has remained one of my favorite shows that I've ever seen! The cast was on fire, the music was phenomenal, and the Blumenthal theater is such a great performing space that it just enhances any show that comes to visit.

This time was no different. I've been trying to make it up to NYC for several months now, mainly to see In the Heights, and the only time my friend was free for me to stay at her place just happened to be from Jan 3rd - 6th. Anyways, as soon as I realized that my trip coincided with the final show, I booked tickets immediately.

The show was by far the absolute highlight of my trip. I took my one friend who's an aspiring actress herself and the whole afternoon was bittersweet. I had a blast from the moment I got to the Neil Simon until we left; however, my friend had her ups and downs since her dream for the past few years has been to land the role of Tracy, and after 5 auditions she's had 5 call-backs but been cut each time at the end . Anyways, despite being a bit sad, she was equally thrilled to be at the final show and was determined to get us backstage because through the auditioning she'd become good friends with Constantine. So after lunch at the cafe right next door, we decided to hang outside the stage door since it was still over an hour til curtain hoping we might catch him or have someone else entering tell him she was here. What ended up happening was actually better. One of the ensemble members came out with his own camera to film some of the crowd and soak up the moment and I happened to be right beside him so he handed me the camera to film him with the crowd. After we got to talking and my friend asked about Constantine, who was apparently busy because his family members had just arrived, but after hearing that she was a friend, the guy told us he'd make us his guests instead and put us on the list to go backstage! I couldn't believe it! Here, I was just thrilled to be at the final performance and able to see Harvey and Marissa, and now we had the chance to go backstage.

So right after Harvey finished his speech, my friend and I hurried around to the stage door, and after a little bit of waiting we were in! The whole thing still seems so surreal and the stage was still packed! We met Harvey for a few seconds, but of course he was incredibly busy. After that I went to go find the cast member who invited us backstage and talked with him for a while longer and congratulated him on the performance and thanked him again and then spoke for a second with Kate Loprest. Meanwhile, my friend was meeting Jerry Mitchell and Bernard Telsey. My friend met up with me a few minutes later, and that's when we got to meet Sarah Jessica Parker and Laura Bell Bundy. After we talked with Marissa for a few minutes which was a real treat she was incredibly sweet. Constantine came up after he'd changed out of his costume and found my friend and then we all got to meet other cast members. We were up on stage for at least a good half hour while everyone mingled and talked but it definitely felt like a blur. A bit later we met Matthew Brodrick and a few other people, haha and of course my friend made a point of taking a few photos around the stage before everyone started to trickle out.

The whole experience was certainly unexpected and a once in a lifetime treat. Haha we were both on cloud 9 by the time we finally made it home! Sorry to ramble but this was an amazing trip!!!

So I have a question about seating in the theater. I'm officially going to be up in NYC from Jan 3rd to the 6th and am going to see the 8PM show on the 3rd. As of right now, ticketmaster lists the best center stage seating at Row F on the Front Mezannine but when I just leave it at Best Available it lists the Row B in the orchestra at seats 5-7.

My main question is, with Front Mezannine and Orchestra being at the same price level, at what point is right/left of center too far too get th

Man, I'm planning a trip up to NYC Jan 2nd-6th and never even thought of this! I'd love to be able to watch the original recording of Company and Sunday in the Park. Do you think if I called they'd accept the cover of an Architecture student doing research on set design? I am actually considering the switch to a set design major as soon as I complete my undergraduate work so it's not tooooo much of a stretch.

...You can't blame me lol, I love Broadway, but there's not a lot of opportun

Wow, I'm so torn on this - I'm a huge fan of the three components I've heard about so far.... I loved ERW in Across the Universe and she was AMAZING in King of California opposite of Michael Douglas, I love Julie Taymore, and I'm an obsessive fan of U2, but that being said... a superhero musical... really?

I dunno, I suppose if any team can make it work they've certainly got the best shot at it, and maybe if they abstract some of it enough it could provide a really cool new evolution t

Has anyone seen this production recently? I'm planning a trip up to NYC right after New Years and would really like to see this if it's worth the money. My senior year of high school we performed this and I absolutely fell in love with everything about it and especially my role of Huck.

Anyways, I know that throughout the years there have been many different takes on the show and was wondering if anyone could describe the feel of it now? Is it still performed on a small stage? How are

Has there been any news yet on when any of the other cast members plan to make their last shows? I wasn't lucky to my my trip up to NYC over fall break but I'm REALLY hoping most of the other originals like Lin, Robin, and Janet will still be around in early December when I head up for Winter break!

So I'm extremely disappointed! I had my heart set on heading up to NYC on my fall break this weekend but there's simply no way I can afford it. However, I did see that they've extended the schedule but does anyone have a guess of how long a lot of the original cast will stick around? I get the newsletter from this site, but is there any place that keeps up-to-date info on who is going on each night?

I'm really hoping to maybe come up for Thanksgiving or Winter Break and I'm keeping my f

Somethingwicked you just made my day!

Not as dumb tourist related, but during our high school chorus NYC trip a few years back we got to see Wicked. It was phenomenal bc they'd just had a full cast rehearsal and everyone was on point.

I'll never forget though, we're talking to the Stage manager after about this and that and Shoshana walks out in this white coat with a furry hood, jeans and these like knee high leather boots with like stiletto heels (granted it was Feb and free

I completely agree with staticradar, after first seeing the cast perform on the Tonys it's quickly gone from awe to full on obsession! I can't get the soundtrack out of my head and what's even better is that it's never just one song that's repeating in my head. Sometimes I'm jammin out to "no pare, sigue sigue" other times it's lyrics from "Blackout", right now I'm stuck on the first bit of the "Finale".

Anyways can someone explain to the southern boy how exactly lotto works? I've only

AH, I'd be so excited if there's a tour! I've been disconnected from the theatre scene for a while now but after seeing the performance of "Move On" during the Tonys I was so sad that I couldn't make it up to NYC to see in time. Being a design major, I was especially blown away by the use of the animation, so creative.

So I'm brand new here but after registering this was the first thread I knew I had to come to. I'm completely addicted to this musical after watching the Tonys on Sunday. Luckily my parents got me interested in musicals from an early age, but In the Heights has taken that enthusiasm through the roof! I can't stop listening to the album and I'm keeping my fingers crossed and praying that come Fall break in mid-October I can make it up to NYC and see it myself before the OBC leaves. I'm a southern
