re: My thoughts on EQUUS
 Sep 21 2008, 09:20:45 AM
"I wonder... I think it would change the entire dynamic of the play if you cast an extraordinarily sexy but slightly scary man of about fifty (playing age at least) as Dysart. A Gary Oldman, or an Alan Rickman (or if you want to break away from Harry Potter ALL together, a Tim Roth). I would be very interested in seeing that. I think it could work. Does it sound like a silly idea?"

I'm not sure about sexy, but I read somewhere that the American producers wanted Robin Williams to play Dy

"His being "Daniel Radcliffe" is the only reason he ever got this role."

He had to audition for Kenneth Branagh who was originally going to star in and direct the play, then again for Peter Shaffer and his agent in order to get their blessing and finally Thea Sharrock after she took over.

It was Kenneth Branagh who got Daniel Radcliffe involved with Equus not that long after he invited him to guest star in 'The Play Wot I Wrote'.

"Maybe its just that I'm in high school and a lot of the people I know who are planning on seeing it are teenage girls seeing it just for that reason, but I feel really kind of bad for Daniel Radcliffe when I hear that people are going just to see him naked and not appreciate the artistic work he's put in."

I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing myself. They may only be going with the intention of seeing Daniel Radcliffe naked, but they are going to have to sit through two hours of

"This could be the reason why the revival isn't fairing so well for its Broadway incarnation."

The West End production took just over a million pounds in advance ticket sales, IIRC. I don't know the exchange rate but I doubt it is currently performing that far behind, if at all.

I have just been reading an article on Newsday.com that gives an insight in to the rehearsals for that scene.

"I saw this in an auditorium where a high percentage of the audience were teenagers (of school-going age) and the response, on the whole, was very mature."

Especially when you compare it with something like In Celebration with Orlando Bloom whose audience was of a similar demographic. :)

"This revival might as well be named SEXQUUS. I know sex sells but I just hate how they continuously promote and hype the nakedness of this production. Equus is not about the brief nudity."

I don't want to sound shallow, but if I had to choose between this or Peter Firth in his Y-fronts, I would pick nudity every time.

"Is that issue of Vogue currently on news stands?"

It's from the September issue.

There is a new picture of Daniel Radcliffe and Richard Griffiths in the new Vogue magazine.

"I think the most annoying thing will be the cheering and snapping of pictures and whatnot."

I've never been to a Broadway show so I don't know what's the norm there, but none of these things happened when I saw the play in the West End. The group of teenagers who were sitting in front of me were no problem.
