CHINESE REPUBLICANS

The “mixed” designations seem overly generous in several cases compared to the excerpted text.

ATONEMENT stage adaptation by Christopher Hampton - Chichester Festival Theatre in May-June

One of my favorite books. The genius of the book is very much tied to the novel format. Although I liked the movie, it was not nearly as successful as the book. A stage adaptation even trickier.

could it be possible Christopher Ashley is taking The Heart to Roundabout?

There have been so many Fiddler productions in New York over the years. I personally never need to see it again.  I don’t know much about this production though

Seriously.  I’m so tired of the ad hominem attacks and threads getting hijacked by folks who need to respond over and over to each other insisting they have the last work.

This has been said over and over on this board by numerous posters. The original Ragtime was almost 30 years ago. I'll bet most of today's audience never saw the original. This is a new Ragtime for a new generation. Levy is giving a great performance. Appreciating Levy's performance doesn't diminish anything that came before.

A lot of people are saying it because

Interesting in that I now refuse to see anything directed by Timbers. I agree he knows how to do spectacle, but it is always at the expense of narrative coherence.

Substitute any ethnic group for the word Jewish and see how that sounds

I saw this last night and while I thought Cole was extraordinary I did t think this lived up to the hype. There were some very funny lines, but otherwise…I guess I found it dull until the last 15 minutes.

“Attended the show for the last time tonight. A few scenes were much more emotional (for the cast) than I’d seen previously but worked so beautifully. The way Susannah held onto Betsy’s legs in that last scene was heartbreaking. And each time I see it I’m convinced that while everyone in that cast is Tony Award worthy, my two favorite performances (besides Susannah Flood who must take home Leading Actress) are Irene Sofia Lucio and Kayla Davion. But everyone

And then she surprised me by her dramatic turn in the Last of Us in which she was utterly brilliant. I didn’t anticipate that she had such range. I am bereft that we will never see what she might have done over the next decade or two.

For those who haven’t seen the Wieir, it is set in a bar where the patrons begin to tell ghost stories. The play is long and as the last ghost story monologue begins, a woman sitting in front of us said in a very loud voice during a brief moment of silence  “Ach..not another ghost story”.

If this is the script used in the Provincetown production, then a lot would need to be revamped for it to succeed in New York.  Maybe it’s the show itself (I hadn’t seen the Fantasticks in decades), the mostly community theater cast, or David Drake’s direction, but it had no charm. And the audience response was tepid at best.
