So...is Broadway not dimming its lights for Jan Maxwell

Feb 15, 2018 — 11:03:14 AM

I just phoned the 212 number for the League that Morosco provided. A very pleasant woman answered on the first ring, listened to my plea that the lights be dimmed for Jan Maxwell, went away briefly to consult someone, and said that a decision has not yet been made. She was very kind and listened to all I said and said that she would pass it on to the appropriate parties. So I think calling might help! I cited some of the arguments given above, including that the lights have been dimmed for pe...

Barbara Cook Has Passed

Aug 8, 2017 — 8:24:23 PM

We have lost a woman of such complexity, who gave us her gift decade after decade as she changed and deepened. I just watched the Kennedy Center tribute again with tears all the way through, as I did when it was first broadcast. So many here have offered remembrances and tributes that I am not sure I have anything meaningful to add. But maybe this. I also just watched for the upteenth time Barbara's upbeat concert performance of "It's Not Where You Start" from Seesaw. To my mind, she ennobles...

Is A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC coming back?

Aug 3, 2016 — 6:57:33 PM

I would love to see Cleo Laine as Mme. Armfeldt. Especially with Imelda Staunton as Desiree. Cleo is still in good voice and I loved her "Liaisons" on her Sondheim CD, admittedly recorded years ago, but still . . . Cleo is often in a wheelchair now, but that would not hamper her in this part.

Barbara Cook Book Signing Event

A touching Stephen Holden NYT review of her performance at Studio 54 a few days ago:http://www.nytimes.com/2016/06/23/arts/music/review-barbara-cook-a-lioness-who-still-has-some-bite-left.html

Thanks for posting the NYT article, Michelle. I had not seen it. I changed the thread title for clarity! :)

Barbara Cook Event Coming Up Monday 6/27

Jun 21, 2016 — 12:15:00 PM

Is anyone going to the Barbara Cook book signing and discussion at B&N this coming Monday evening 6/27? The man hosting the discussion is the co-author (with her) of her new autobio. If anyone goes, please report after.

Closing of Long Day's Journey on 6/26

Jun 20, 2016 — 7:00:25 PM

I was surprised to see today that LDJ is closing on 6/26. Was this always the plan? Wonder why it is closing so soon. I would think there would be demand for tickets still. Maybe it was scheduled for a predetermined run only. Sorry if this is generally known.

Mystery of Edwin Drood

May 3, 2016 — 1:54:37 PM

Off the main point, but related: When Jana Schneider played Helena in the original Drood, she had a line that got great laughs when (in character) she referred to herself as having a "geographically untraceable accent".

Barbara Cook's Memoir

May 1, 2016 — 12:20:43 PM

It was announced a long time ago that Isherwood was co-writing the memoir with Cook. Don't know what happened with that.

Barbara Cook's Memoir

May 1, 2016 — 3:19:28 AM

I was just on Amazon for another purpose and happened to see that Barbara Cook's new memoir "Then and Now" is available for preorder, to be shipped June 21. Co-author is Tom Santopietro, who has also written a bio of Streisand and a book about the Von Trapps. Very excited to read BC's memoir!

Actor Shawn Elliott has Passed Away

Mar 17, 2016 — 4:48:59 PM

I think this might not be true, as his Wikipedia entry does not include his death, I can't find an obituary for him via Google, and the BWW article doesn't come up via the link in the first post. He played a judge for quite a few episodes of the original "Law and Order". Seeing him there, I always wished I could see him in a larger part.

CONFIRMED: Second Stage buys Helen Hayes Theatre; venue to be renamed

Apr 18, 2015 — 12:28:56 AM

I think naming has the power of creating a visual image--desired or un-. Witness the former Phoenix Open Golf Tournament, which got title sponsorship from Waste Management , Inc. The tournament is now billed everywhere as the Waste Management Phoenix Open. Always makes me picture a portapot by the 18th hole.
