I fail to see how that is even slightly funny.

My first thought was, "That's so meeean. I love it!"
One of BWW'S better April fools over the years.
This made me laugh a few times. I'm trying to think of a rhyme for bourgeoisie, my boyfriend offered Hennessy and Tennessee, although Sondheim wouldn't use them.
I like the working title from his new musical though.

The quotes seemed kind of realistic from the two of them.
Good job Michael Dale.
I don't think BroadwayWorld can ever top their 2005 Bill Clinton/Billy Flynn story that got everyone.

Tag, What was the Bill/Billy story? I wasn't around here back then.
I would imagine Bill Clinton to play Billy Flynn in Chicago the musical on Broadway

That was an excellent use of context clues, gypsy!
^Yep. We'd even get threads years later of people saying they'd heard it was happening. It was all related to the original prank.
Thanks FindingNamo! My mind just naturally jumped to the conclusion. Would his Billy Flynn have played the saxophone?
LMFAO!! I especially liked how they said "my friend Andy in London" hahahahaha
I read it before going to the message boards here. It totally got me. I'm so gullible. I thought, "he's human after all. Nice self-deprecating humor. How nice for everybody."
I'm sure I will be more careful the rest of the day. Looking forward to the NPR story. (I also got taken in by their "belly button removal" story.)
OP, you should delete your comment part. Don't give it away. Just include the link. Why deprive everyone of the fun? Let them figure it out for themselves.

Got me too...very good BWW!
Very funny.
And it would be great if they did do something together at the Tonys.
Hilarious.
Good one this year.

Comden Green: I guess I was worried people would think I was fooled by it, and was posting it seriously, and criticize me for it. You know how this board is. But sure, I'll edit it.
What makes it good/funny?
Either you momentarily believe it, then feel like a fool and are bummed it's not actually happening - or else you don't believe it, in which case what's the point?
Jbroadway. I do know what you mean. But the comment you left is pretty funny too. I'll stand up for you if you are ridiculed.
"What makes it good/funny"
This for instance:
"Yeah, I was running at the mouth a little during that interview," the 85-year-old musical theatre legend explained. "Like I said in Sondheim On Sondheim I drink while I'm writing lyrics and I had just spent a full day trying to come up with an internal rhyme for 'bourgeoisie.' I'm not in my 30s anymore. Brilliance like 'personable/coercin' a bull' doesn't just pop out after one c****nay these days."
Internal rhyme for bourgeoisie is especially funny given how difficult it would be even for Sondheim to do that, and given that the Bunuel adaptation actually suggests such a rhyme. Making use of Sondheim's drinking while writing lyrics to explain his controversial comments is good and very clever. And recalling personable/coercin' a bull' is funny and clever because it parallels exactly the kind of internal rhyme challenge posed by bourgeoisie. Having Sondheim self-congratulate himself on the brilliance of that lyric from Company is amusing. The idea of him being let down by the aid of just a single c****nay at this stage of his life and career is droll.
(why does chard-onnay get bleeped out, btw?)
"Either you momentarily believe it, then feel like a fool and are bummed it's not actually happening - or else you don't believe it, in which case what's the point?"
I momentarily believed it and that made the punch punchier. I wasn't completely bummed out by it not being true because a) it's not exactly tragic if it doesn't happen, and b) it actually could happen; the joke has thrown down the gauntlet for it happening. Once I realized it was a joke, the point was seeing how they would build the joke. They built it well.
